7/28/12 Club Mtg. @ Ohiopyle

Post by Dave K »

The Club Summer Quarterly Meeting will be 7/27/12 – 7/29/12 at Benner’s Campground near Ohiopyle, PA.

The Club has reserved the campground’s pavilion but you need to make your own camping reservations (with only a few exceptions, the Triple K will be closed this weekend). Currently, there are several sites on hold near the pavilion but you need to make your reservation soon if we are going to hold these spots. Tell them you are with the Coastals and camping should be about $12/person/night.

There are several events lined up for Saturday. In the morning, there will be a pancake breakfast starting at 8:30 with as many ingredients as possible purchased locally to support the communities in which we boat. The breakfast is free but is only available to paid dues members .

Saturday evening, the guys from AMONGSTIT.TV will be at [s]the campground pavilion[/s] Wilderness Voyagers in Ohiopyle to show their films “No Man’s Land” and “Canoe Movie 2”. These films are free for all to attend.

Check out the Coastals Movie Premier Announcement HERE

“No Man’s Land” features the whitewater of Virginia's Roanoke Valley and specifically John’s Creek.

Come out to hear what the Coastal Canoeists are doing in an effort to improve stream access in Virginia.

“Canoe Movie 2” features single blade destination paddling and promises to have more action and less talking than “Canoe Move 1”.

<iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/26764886? ... portrait=0" width="400" height="225" frameborder="0"></iframe>

The guys from AMONGSTIT will have copies of their movies for sale and will also be holding a raffle to help offset their expenses. It hasn’t been firmed up yet but Wilderness Voyagers and Immersion Research are considering doing something special for paid dues Coastals members .

Saturday evening’s (rough) schedule will be:
4:00 p.m. Board Meeting
5:30 p.m. Social
6:00 p.m. Potluck Dinner: Either bring a main dish, or, if your last name ends with A-G, bring dessert; H-K, bring appetizer; M-T, bring a side dish, U-Z bring salad.
7:00 p.m. General Meeting
8:30ish “No Man’s Land” and “Canoe Movie 2” at Wilderness Voyagers in Ohiopyle. Bring a chair and get there early to have a place to put it.

Wade has done a nice job of lining up several trips over the weekend.
7/27/12 (Fri.) Lower Yough
7/28/12 (Sat.) Lower Yough
7/28/12 (Sat.) Upper Yough
7/29/12 (Sun.) Lower Yough
7/29/12 (Sun.) Big Mike's Not the Lower Yough Trip

[s]Hopefully someone will step up to offer a Novice trip.[/s]

Although not an Official Club Trip, there is also this option for both Saturday and Sunday if the Lower Yough isn’t quite for you yet.

The OCT's are listed in the CaNews and on the online Calendar. The details of the Official Club Trips have been posted on the message board and can be found in the above links.

This meeting is also opposite the nearby Upper Yough Race which is an extended release for that run. It is also oppostite Friendsville Days whidh means some modified access to the UY on Saturday (info below).

Hope you decide to come.

No Man’s Land:
Uniquely located between the Allegheny Mountains and the Blue Ridge Plateau of Virginia…the Roanoke Valley is surrounded by both world class whitewater and controversial access issues. ‘No Man’s Land’ is the definitive film documenting the struggles surrounding John’s Creek, the subject of an ongoing legal dispute between local landowners and whitewater enthusiasts. After visiting John's, the documentary then takes the viewer on a wild ride into the beauty and danger that defines Virginia’s most notorious gorge, Jewell Creek.

'No Man's Land' is part of a short film series called "Watersheds" which aims to not only highlight some of the finest river systems we enjoy, but to also dig deeper into why whitewater has formed in them. For more on this series of films, visit AMONGSTIT.COM .

As mentioned above, below is a heads up to those of you planning to paddle the Upper Yough on Saturday that “Friendsville Days” is also that day.

Below is all I know:
Wilderness Voyagers wrote: Race Day Parking & Town Parade: The Town of Friendsville is having it's "Friendsville Day's" festivities on the same day as the Upper Yough Race. In fact a parade float line up is taking the whole North side of the road where Boaters Park, parade set to run at Noon. The Town is going to have an early one day only opening of the new parking area, on the grassy field to the South side of the normal boater parking area. Please enter Town on the West side since down town will be closed to traffic around 11:45pm, you will be directed to enter the new parking area right next to the Liquor store. Please DO NOT drive down Water street to access the parking. We even want you to Take Out under the Big Rout 68 Bridge and walk over to the parking area behind the Methodist Church. This is a one time use only to solve the problem of two big activities going on at the same time. The Town is working diligently to get the new parking area open permanently, please be patient. Also, the Friendsville Days festivities at the Town Park includes FOOD and entertainment. There is a great little Thai food vendor who comes here every year along with the wholesome local offerings. Thank you and please have a great race day!

Are there any novice level trips scheduled? I may be able to come with my son, but he's not kayaked before (not my fault, he lives with his mom! :)

You should lead one on the Middle Yough. You'd be fine.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming....WOW What a ride! . . . . . Trying to live up to this, Priceless. As long as you have good insurance!

I may be able to handle that, let me make sure I can go before I commit. Also, if I lead it I'll have to make sure everyone knows I've never run it.

Thanks for the link Mango!

Friday trip

I will be coordinating the Friday trip. Details will be tightened up as we approach the date but you can expect a meeting time about 1pm at the grassy knoll.

Upper Yough

Is the trip on the Upper going to be first timers friendly? I was planning on R2ing.

Made my reservations. They said there were about 10 confirmed as of the time of this post. I'm planning on a Friday mid/early afternoon departure if anyone is interested in carpooling. +1 on the UY PFD. Hopefully dry hair on the second day cheoah release and chattooga section IV at lowish water will boost my resume enough for someone to take me under their wing.

Planning to play boat the LY on Sunday. 10:00 hour is a reasonable time frame for me to get packed, to the put-in, and set shuttle. Remember a 10:00 pass means you can put on between 10 and 11. Rangers tend to be pretty flexible on times as well.

A few links have been updated at the request of the Programs chair.
Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke
