O.C.T. - 02/16/08 - Hardware River Trip
This is a little early to post this but I have already gotten an inquire about the trip. At present the water levels have been low with a cut off of 70CFS on the USGS gauge. If the level has fallen below 70 CFS and no rain forecast then I will cancel the trip by Wednesday 02/13/08. The trip details follow:
Richard
We meet at the Town of Hardware takeout at 10:00am. Pack gear up and shuttle to the Rt 6 Hardware River putin. This means no more than 5 hours on the river and off by 4:00pm. Please e-mail or call Thursday Evening by 9:00pm.
Description
From Rt. 6 to the James River, the Hardware River moves along much faster than the upper section. It is still a small stream, 40’ to 50’ wide at the widest parts. It is fairly flat in most parts, but the current is fairly good; there will be a couple of trees across the stream. It has at least three Class 2 rapids before joining the James River. The three rapids are as follows: gravel bar with a discernible drop, 2’ drop on a left turn, 2’ ledge with a number of chutes, all Class 2 or less.
The rating for this trip is Novice but the trip is in Feb so treat it as an N/I because of cold water.
Thank you

If it's running above minimum and my wife will let me go, I'm in.
Looks like showers are forecast for 2/13 - may want to see what these bring before cancelling?
The question is.... Ask for permission or go and then beg for forgiveness

Me too! I would say that tomorrow (Wednesday) evening or early Thursday morning we should know if there will be enough water in the river for the trip.s2welee wrote:I'm in too, assuming water is available. I checked the gauge earlier today and saw 49cfs...I hope the rain comes.

Re: O.C.T. - 02/16/08 - Hardware River Trip
Looking good for the Hardware River Trip! Time to make plans. We meet at the confluence of the Hardware and James Rivers. This is at a boat landing. We need to load people, boats, and gear into as few vehicles as possible as there is little parking at the putin. The water is cold so dress accordantly. The trip is 12 miles so bring food and drink for a nice paddle. The only possible problem may be trees down in the river.YeOldeAndDecrepite wrote:This is a little early to post this but I have already gotten an inquire about the trip. I am bringing my most comfortable canoe I have. rec-kayaks are a little slow. Touring kayaks are faster and usually more comfortable.s2welee wrote:YOAD,
What type of boat are you brining? I was thinking of my stable and comfortable canoe or my rec-kayak, but I wanted some recommendations.

I've only got two options - both kayaks... Old rec. boat or new creek boat! Of course I want to break in the new boat, but it sounds like I should opt for the rec boat to keep up with yeolde canoes! Thoughts, comments, concerns???YeOldeAndDecrepite wrote:I am bringing my most comfortable canoe I have. rec-kayaks are a little slow. New boat, one heck of a work out! Old boat, laid back having tea and crackers. Your choice.slo2rol wrote:I've only got two options - both kayaks... Old rec. boat or new creek boat!
