Ful Moon Paddle Saturday, 7/22/2024, weather and flow allowing

Post by PaddleAllen »

Friends,
Looks like a good time to make a full moon paddle on the James - Scottsville to the Hardware Wildlife Mngt. Area boat ramp. This is a 6.4-mile, class I run. The flow is a little low, but above 1000 cfs. Good weather is projected, with a 4-5 mph breeze.

This is not an official Coastal's trip. Paddle at your own risk. That said, this is one of the flattest sections of the river. Beginner level paddling, with little fast water. But there will be the distinct probability of grounding or hitting rocks. Bring your headlamps and safety gear!

I suggest we meet at the Scottsville Boat Ramp at 19:45 (7:45PM) and run shuttle. Be back at the put-in by 20:45 (8:45PM), with some daylight available to launch. MAYBE KILL SOME TIME TO WATCHE THE SUNSET.

If you need more information or a shuttle map, contact me. Allen at 434-906-9510 or jaspivey00@yahoo.com.

Saturday (6/22)
Projected flow for the James - Scottsville: 1,310 cfs (3.0')
Sunset: 20:40
Moonrise: 21:53
Partly cloudy, slight wind

I would love to do a full moon paddle, but I'll be out of town this weekend.

Your idea to kill some time to watch sunset is a good one. Moonrise isn't until nearly 10 PM on Saturday.

Thursday -moonrise about 8 PM, Friday and 9 PM.

Several years ago I did a full moon paddle and realized at that time the best day would actually be a day, or even 2, before the full moon since we would have more light.

We (Emily, Eli, Bob, Brian, William, and I) had a really nice moonlight paddle last Saturday (6/22) night. We put in at the boat access in Scottsville and paddled down to the Hardware River Wildlife boat access. A 6.6-mile, class I, stroll. It was a beautiful night and a break from the hot weather of late. The flow was slightly low (121 cfs (2.91'), but we did not have much trouble negotiating the rocks.

We got to see the James River Batteau Company unloading their batteau while waiting for the group run shuttle. These guys run river and sunset cruises all summer. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get any photos at night and they never provide a true reflection of the beauty of being on the water at night. The moon was hugh looking as it rose. The fireflies provided a nice light show all night. At one point the trees along the shore looked like Christmas trees with twinkle lights, there were so many fireflies. It turned into a fishing trip as well for Brian, as a startled fish jumped into his kayak.

A great time with good friends!

The small colored lights are glow sticks we use to keep tabs on each in the dark. The moon was hugh looking as it rose. The fireflies provided a nice light show all night.
