OCT - Maury - Buena Vista to Glasgow for the Spring Rendezvous
OCT: Maury Buena Vista to Glasgow Sat. May 14 for the Spring Rendezvous
Post by Allen Spivey
The plan is to run from the Maury from Buena Vista to Glasgow. Meet at 10:30 a.m. at the Glen Maury Park River access. We will set shuttle from there.
The Maury is currently running, and I will be watching the weather and river levels. Rain is forecast for Saturday, hopefully it will be at a runnable level. American Whitewater does not describe this section separate from the Rockbridge Baths section. It is a step lower in classification, at a Class I-II+ run. Most people that have not run it describe it as pleasantly surprising, with more rapids than expected.

If the river flow is not at a runnable level (too high or low), then we will switch to the Buchannan to Alpine section of the James. We will meet at the Boat launch in Buchanan (beside Twin Rivers Outfitters) at 11:00 AM and set shuttle from there.
Respond here or call/email if you plan to join us.
Check back later in the week for an update on which river we’ll run.

For rivers.run info I would suggest a note about Gooseneck Dam and the line to take, since this is a beginner level run and there is some rebar in that location. Just my 2 cents

Re: OCT - Maury - Buena Vista to Glasgow for the Spring Rendezvous
Sorry for my late notification. I was surprised that I needed to add a notice as I thought all three runs were part of the weekend program.
I see that the copied link to AW does not work. Please update the link with
https://www.americanwhitewater.org/cont ... l/958/main
Please list the run as an experienced beginner/novice run.
You can add this notice, if you like: There are three main rapids (class II+) in the run. All are from blown out dams. Gooseneck is the more difficult of the three. In high flows, this rapid can approach a low class III. We will cover the best lines to take through these rapids before running them.
Thank you,
Allen

Hi Allen, I am nursing a shoulder injury and would be interested in a shorter trip as you discussed with Ginny in Feb. What is the Plan B in event of thunderstorms?

Reese,
You can pull out at Rockbridge Stone Products, along River Road and take off about 2.9 miles of flat water. That is the most common place to pull out early. There are other suitable pullouts along River Road, but they are all on private property. There is a great beach at Devils Step Dam Rapid, but again it is private property with a home next to the river. That cuts the run in half. The folks there have always been very nice when we had swimmers having to dump their boats on their beach. If you go early and drive to their house and explain your situation they may allow you to park there and pull out. Above that, there are no other suitable pullouts that are not on private property.
I wish I knew the peoples names at the halfway point, but do not.
Let me know if you want an early pull out and we will drop you vehicle at the appropriate spot.

Re: OCT - Maury - Buena Vista to Glasgow for the Spring Rendezvous
Hey Friends,
The good news is the chance of thunderstorms has now been removed from the forecast for the Saturday (5/14) paddle on the lower Maury River, the temperature should be in the low 70's, and the water level is holding at a nice level. The bad news is we still have about a 50/50 chance of off-and-on showers. A little rain will not stop the fun! Come join the run. I will be at the Glen Maury Park river access at 10:30 AM, ready to go.

Hi Allen,
I am interested in this trip. I have done the middle section of the Maury but not the lower. I got an error with the cell phone number provided. I can be reached at 7037744787
Thanks for coordinating this trip
