Tyro To Massies Mill on Tye Saturday?

Post by edwin_talley »

Would anyone be interested in running the Tye from Tyro to Masssies Mill on Saturday? I have not run this before so would need at least one person who knows this section of river.

Tye on Sunday?

Post by dkeller »

A few of us are thinking off doing a low water upper Tye run on Sunday.

Plans are fluid but that is the current plan.

Looking for 300 - 500 cfs. Probably pretty bumpy, especially below 400 cfs if it drops that far but been a few years and looking for something like that.

Last ran it around 400 cfs and was enough.

Plus it is close enough for 3-4 of us to run 2 cars if no one else around or want to risk shuttles.

Hope holds enough for Sunday as Saturday is no good.

Don.

I'd be interested for Sunday if the water holds. I'd need to know if it's a go tonight, though, b/c I'd be coming from Richmond. I've run from Tyro down once at high water (just a wash), but would like to run at lower.

Upper Tye low water run.

Post by dkeller »

We are about as certain as one can be.

We plan to do from the church or bridge (hwy 56)where N and S fork come together down to Massies Mill for the 8.5 mile run.

We will be heading up from Yorktown about 8am so should be at Massies Mill takeout (Tye River Park?) no later than 11 if no issues on drive up there. We are picking up someone at Massies Mill and leaving their car there so Shuttle will be set. So you can meet us there and follow us up to put in or throw your boat on one of our two vehicles and leave your car at takeout.

I have done the upper section to AT bridge twice but it has been 10 years since last time. Five if us, it looks like. One other has done this section to AT. Level was probably around 400 both times but hard to remember. I know I have never done this section very high as a swim at high water could suck.

Will PM my cell to you now. Just let me know. Don.

Was your reply directed at my post for Sunday or the original post for Saturday?

After I read it again I was not sure.

I sent my cell thru PM so let me know if you did not get it.

Tye from Massies Mill 5/23/20

Post by JBowman »

I put in a mile or so up the North Fork of the Tye and paddled to Massies Mill on the main Tye today and it was a great run. Good III+, maybe pushing IV for some. I would highly recommend this section. It only took like two hours or so at around 550 CFS. I had never paddled it before, but a solid paddler and myself did it just run and gun.

In addition, just a heads up to anyone who paddles the Tye from Nash to Massies Mill or if you know someone who lost a kayak there. I found an older yellow Liquid Logic recreation/touring kayak pinned against the low water bridge today (5/23/20). A friend and I worked it free but there was no name or phone number on or in the boat. I thought maybe someone would know who it belongs to. I left the kayak right there on land right off the bridge and luckily talked to a landowner down there that said that was fine to leave the kayak where I did. I am not sure who you would contact to get it, but if it is your kayak I left it high and dry by the low water bridge. The rear hatch did lose its cover though, other than that I could not see any serious damage.

Thanks for the trip report from today

Post by dkeller »

Looks like around 400 cfs tomorrow

Probably best that it will slow down a bit from today although likely more
Rocks to dodge at 400.

Guessing a very solid class 3 run with maybe a few 3+ spots.

Assume no wood issues as you did not mention any.

Been 10 years for a couple of us and first time for 3 others.

Should be fun as long as we all do OK

There were no serious wood issues today. Definitely wood in places but nowhere it could not be avoided. There was one tight slot on the left where a tree was down and under the second to last bridge a huge root ball in the middle section. Other than those two trees nothing but low hanging branches at times. As long as you are aiming high when you paddle you will have plenty of time to maneuver through those areas with the trees. I did not have to portage except at the low water bridge.
