Gauley Fest 9/14/18 - 9/15/18

Post by Giggles »

YOU MUST BE A PAID DUES COASTALS MEMBER TO PARTICIPATE ON THIS TRIP

CAMPING:
This trip will be based out of the Rays Campground (https://rayscampground.com/)

BOATING:

LOWER GAULEY FRIDAY:
This trip is typically coordinated by Dave K , but this year I will be trying to fill his shoes
First timers with qualified resumes are welcome. If interested, contact me at sejalms@hotmail.com

This trip in the past has been quite successful with a mix of veterans and first timers

Let’s figure on meeting in the parking lot of the former Food Land in Gauley Bridge at 11:30 on Friday morning. The GPS coordinates are 38.159262, -81.188911. Food Land is on Rt. 60 on the left just before you get to the intersection of 60 and 39 in Gauley Bridge. It was a good sized grocery store. You won’t miss it. It is NOT the Food Land near the intersection of 19 and 60. Make sure you are at the right one. If you’re not in Gauley Bridge, you are at the wrong Food Land.

NEW RIVER GORGE SATURDAY:
We are meeting at Rays campground at 9am Saturday to run the New River Gorge. I am hoping one of the Veterans will help me coordinate this day as I will be on the Upper Gauley with a small group of Veterans.
If you are able to coordinate the New Gorge please contact me A.S.A.P.
If it is your first time, contact me (sejalms@hotmail.com) so we can make sure this is the trip for you. Veterans are welcome to just show up but DO NOT be late.

This trip is also quite large and has only been successful in the past because we have split up in to smaller groups. If you are interested in leading or safety boating for a few folks, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Another key factor to this trip’s success is having a concurrent trip on the Upper New (Thurmond to Cunard) so we can work out the PRO shuttle. Stephen Weigangt is coordinating this section
If you are interested in doing this Upper New trip Saturday please contact him directly swiegandt@gmail.com.

Look forward to seeing every one and paddling with you

Saturday Upper New and Sunday Early NRG

Post by SteveEW »

As Sejal mentioned, I will be leading the Upper New trip on Sat, Sept 15. This will allow all of us to benefit from the Magic shuttle as well as offer some more accessible water for club members who are not interested in the New River Gorge section.
The Upper New is a beautiful stretch of river just above the gorge, so it is a close and easy shuttle from the campground. The water is mostly flat to class II with one exception (Surprise!), and I can help anyone who would like to avoid that rapid to navigate around it. Participants do not need a lot of experience, but should be able to paddle reasonably straight and be able to comfortably wet exit.

For anyone who is not ready for the whitewater fun to be over, I am also leading what I like to call a commando run of the NRG on Sunday morning EARLY. Find me at the campground for further details as this trip is designed to try to get people home at a reasonable hour on Sunday.

I'll be showing up on Friday evening, staying at Rays, and I'll run the NRG on Saturday. I'll be looking for something to run on Sunday before heading home as well. I will not run the LG on Sunday because I'm not interested in sticking around until the water gets down to the PI.

I'm in!!

LG on Friday then pizza, NRG on Saturday, G-Fest Saturday night, and mt. biking on Sunday!!!!
Envelope – Free stationary taken from the Marriott while on a business trip.
Snowflake address label – sent to me free and had to be used up.
Stained glass stamp – It was more then three feet away from me when I decided to get them so you know I didn’t see them clearly
Butterfly and Sunflower stickers on the back – Also free and required because the glue on the envelope was so old it no longer stuck.

Need a paddle partner in my Phat Cat (Shredder Type Raft) for the Friday afternoon Lower Gauley Trip. I have paddled the Lower Gauley dozens of times in both kayaks and rafts over a 30 year period, not so much during the last 10 years. prefer somebody who has done the Lower Gauley a few times.

I'm on my way to Gauley Bridge to see if anyone is there. At that point I'll either do the LG or head over to the Cherry depending on levels. I'm driving now, so may not be able to check in for a bit.

I am in the area. Let me know if any changes in tomorrow’s NRG plan or if anyone thinking of doing something else new.
