eclipse trip
Just got good news from Smoky Mountain Meadows with a call saying two spots opened up in the field. So all of you who have committed have a place to stay Sunday and Monday night. Please keep my number in your phone so we can coordinate. PM me if you do not yet have it. As I have said you are on your own for eclipse viewing and any paddling before Tuesday. I might be around for a Sunday paddle but it will be after a long night's drive. There wil be more Florida and Georgia cars going to the Smokies than usual and I want to avoid a Sunday traffic jam.
I am encouraging a commitment to a Tuesday Tuckaseegee Gorge trip. A few folks need to get back to Virginia right away and the Tuck is five miles long, easy shuttle, and right on the Smoky Mountain Expressway to get going at the takeout. I paddled the Tuck a couple of times on the way up the skill ladder 14-15 years ago and did not go back often, but a few years later I took a lesson from a top canoeist there and he showed me there is lot of class 3 fun to be had on this class 2 river.
Say meet at the gas station at exit 64 on the south end of Bryson City, where US 19 meets Smoky Mountain Expressway and Alarka Road comes out from SMM, say at 10:15 am on Tuesday August 22? The Tuck does not run until later in the morning from its dam release.

Like to paddle something
I got a space in the group site at Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park. I'm thinking of something Class III/IV that's nearby, such as the Ocoee or the Telico. Anyone interested?
Change of plans
I decided to camp in Bryson City, NC. There was no room at Smokey Mountain Meadows, so I'm camping about 15 minutes away. I'm looking forward to paddling on Saturday and Sunday
Contact David
The eclipse event on the calendar says "contact David Bernard." It doesn't say how and I can't find him in the Memberlist. Will someone please tell me how to contact David?
solar eclipse trip list
If those of you who have committed to the trip would not mind, make sure I have your name, phone number and email. I would like to (privately) prepare a list of all of us with a little info. Since I have not paddled with some of you, we are staying at different places, and cell/internet service may be spotty with the large number of people expected in the Smokies, it would be useful to print that out. It could also be useful to present to the proprietors of Smoky Mountain Meadows or Scenic View Motel, as things will be hectic for them. Lastly go ahead and post ideas for trips Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Maybe we can have a plan going in. I will be driving north through Atlanta Sunday AM - never know what traffic will be like anyway so I want people to be able to contact each other and make plans without necessarily going through me.

keep in mind:
“I had a perfect view, up until two minutes before totality.” That's when Straton says the temperature dipped so suddenly, he missed the exact celestial moment he'd been waiting for:
“Mist rose off the river, and entirely blocked the total eclipse,” he says.

made it
Made it to the Scenic View. Traffic from Atlanta was busy but no traffic jams. Hope it is clear tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting at the gas station at exit 64 Tuesday at 10:15 for the Tuck Gorge.
