Sun. Aug. 7 Seven Islands float trip (Annual)

Post by TedMc »

Ted and Caroline are doing their 'levendy leventh' annual float trip next weekend. There are two James River trips scheduled for Sat. That and the weather forecasts on TWC and Accuweather lead me to choose Sunday.

Contact me if you are coming as I would like to advance plan the shuttle as my vehicle will not be available for shuttle. Include your mobile phone number. After lunch I like to float the flat water section and like being the last one off the river.

I'd like to join you on Sunday. Don't have my cell phone number with me tonight but will send it tomorrow. Just need to know when & where to meet.

Still trying to get a handle on this new boat.

7 islands

Post by TedMc »

not sure PM is working on web site. So here is the beta for tomorrow for the whole world:

Seven Islands beta. Scottsville water level is 2010 cfs and very good. Center channel is the preferred route for the best rapids and our favorite lunch spot with a body surfing wave. The putin is the Hardware River WMA and the takeout is the New Canton DGIF ramp.

Setting the shuttle is always hard because of the 34 mile round trip distance between the two. Here is what I found works best for managing drivers and boat transfers. I will drop off Caroline and our gear at the putin at 10:00 AM. Everyone coming from the West (if you are area code 434) go to the putin at 10:00 AM, drop all passengers, and your gear and travel the 20 minutes to the takeout and arrive by 10:30 AM. Coming from the East or MD go to the takeout at 10:30 AM. Tonight there are 9 drivers needing a shuttle to the putin and probably two K-1’s and an IK to be transferred unless they can become one of the two shuttle vehicles. At a minimum, there are two vehicles not available for shuttle. Mine and Anne Stout (with wheelchair). Remember, at the end of the day the two shuttle drivers will need a return to the putin. Please be flexible with your part of the shuttle. Jim is coming from Tidewater and Wanda from MD.

River trip overview: Launch after 11:00 AM, with a 30 minute lunch stop. Since this is a ’float trip’, after lunch, I desire to float in the water next to my canoe, smoke a cigar, and otherwise not paddle the three miles of flat water to the takeout. You all are free to float with Caroline and me or participate in the typical after lunch fast paddle to the takeout. You can be off by 3:00 PM.
Weather: 88 degrees with sun, wind nne @ 5 mph which will be in your face retarding your down river experience.
Call me with questions. My cell is eight O four -218-1238 and remember cell coverage away from US 15 is not there for most of us.

water level update

Post by TedMc »

Notice. The water level doubled yesterday from a sweet 2000 cfs to 5380 cfs. It is not an unsafe level.
I have done it in 2009 at this level which is high, muddy and washed out. This will not be a float trip but a flush. That paddle had a launch at 11:00 and was over by 2:30 with one hour for lunch. You have been advised

7 islands change in leadership

Post by TedMc »

Caroline and I will arrive on time as scheduled. WE ARE OUT as leaders.
If someone wants to take it over we will assist with boat security and shuttle. We are not paddling at this level today as it is high, muddy and washed out.

James at Scottsville crested at 11,000 cfs at Noon today

Post by TedMc »

The James at Scottsville yesterday had 2010 cfs. Today at 6 AM it had 5380 cfs. This is the highest I have ever done it, so Caroline and I backed out. Those of you who paddled today launched on a fast rising river. Scottsville at noon hit 11,000 cfs or a two and a half foot rise in the morning from 5.5 ft to 8 ft. Phyllis White, Martha James, Wanda Meck, Jim Farrell and Edwin Talley, you guys rode a big crest. Tonight Scottsville is 'down' to 7770 cfs. Give us a trip report!
