O.C.T. New River Rendezvous over Labor Day
If this looks familiar it's because I did a lazy cut-and-paste from last year. As in years past this is a loosely organized multi-club trip to the New River in West Virginia. Opinions vary but this is around the 22nd year this trip has happened.
Again, in keeping with the loosely organized theme I am late in posting this (plus I'm a slacker). Feel free to just show up.
Labor Day is late this year. We'll meet at Ray's Campground on Saturday, September 5th at ten. If you are driving up on Saturday morning try to get there a little early to set up camp as trips generally spin off right after the meeting. We'll meet at the picnic tables behind the office. We'll meet at nine on Sunday and Monday.
This trip is open to all levels of paddlers. The upper sections of the New are pretty newbie friendly while the gorge offers more difficult rapids. With rain other options open up.
Where? Ray's is in Hico (pronounced HIGHcoh) near the intersection of routes 60 and 19 which is about five miles north of where the New goes under route 19. Head west very briefly on 60 and turn right on Sunday Road. Sunday Road is only paved in the middle so take it easy. Ray's is about a mile on the left. 304-658-4386. Reservations are not required for tent sites. $9 per person per night. Electric sites are $5 extra. Dogs must be leashed. Please respect quiet hours.

Looking forward to it! FYI, this is a good time to try the Gorge for a 1st time if you've been wanting/ready to try it (low but very doable & fun, & typically a good support group on this trip).
Also FYI that we're planning to cook in camp @ least Sat nite to avoid the holiday crowds @ restaurants. Thought others might want to consider that, too.

Hello all. I'll also be joining with a friend or two. We're interested in paddling Saturday and Sunday but have only been to WV once and are not familiar with the water. Primary experience is on the upper (<7') and lower James (<4.7') in Richmond with Hollywood being ported as much as run. Has anyone started making plans to lead any intermediate paddles? Thanks. Rick
RickL: There will be trips on the easier sections of the New. Generally we have a grizzled veteran or three who step up to run trips. Failing that, I'll run a trip on Saturday to get folks to know each other and the area. After that there's enough community knowledge to make things happen on Sunday and Monday.
Ginny: Our thoughts on cooking in camp are low-key. Maybe bring a little something extra to share?
Cheers,
Ken
