Summer Club Event July 2015!

Post by Alicia »

Who would have thought the New River Gorge would be too high and we'd have multiple options normally only available in the winter? What a treat to paddle these gems in shorts!

On Sat, 7/18, a group of 13 ran the Cranberry River @ 3.6'. There were 5 first timers, & I think it's safe to say we all had a blast. Another group of 20 ran the Cherry River and also were all smiles afterwards.

It was great to get to come back to the campground for a cookout instead of driving to a restaurant & waiting in line. It also made it nice for socializing. Big thanks to the Coastals leadership for orchestrating (& cooking) the burgers & dogs. And thanks to all for some great side dishes. Bill Tanger gave a talk on the work of FORVA, Friends of the Rivers of Virginia. The take-away was to get motivated & work on access issues.

On Sunday, 3 groups headed to the Top Gauley, the Meadow, & the Upper New @ Glade Ck. More treats in 90 degree weather. (Hopefully others will chime in on the various trips.)

NRG July Trip

Post by RickLucas »

Hello and thanks to all. This was my first outing with Coastals and it was an excellent adventure. Plan on joining you for more. Paddled the Cherry and Glade. Loads of fun. As I was the only one to have a dump in the first wave train on the Glade, I really am looking forward to getting out there again and experiencing it right side up. Darn boat! I agree with the cookout venue being the way to go even though I'm a newbie. Will volunteer for service duty.

Hmmm. Cranberry in short sleeves while not worried about snow on the road, I can handle that. As to Sunday, it's been years since I've been on the Glade Creek section of the New. It was pretty high so the waves in the first rapid, especially, were pretty big and coming in from every direction. It's deep there though so our one swim was harmless.

Yes, yes, big thanks to the volunteers who made this one happen. I had a great weekend. Nice to meet some new folks. ..... Working on posting a few photos.

Cheers,

Coastals rocks!! The Quarterly Gathering in July was another fabulous adventure for me reminding me of how important Coastals is in my life. I paddled the Cherry River for the first time and had a blast! One of the reasons why it was so much is because of the Coastals folks who came. When else can I paddle with ACA certified instructors, canoeists who paddle 200 days/year or more, 5-year-old kayakers, shredders who joined Coastals in the 80s, attorneys, beginner boaters, old friends, the designer of the latest Coastals t-shirt, and so many more?! And this is on a river that is rarely ever up except in the winter when I don't paddle. The Cherry is continuous Class II fun.

The Coastals Board & Chairs did a fabulous job as usual organizing the event. The campground is delightful and the owners kind and welcoming. The potluck Sat night included amazing food that I had never had before. Our president did an excellent job summarizing current club activities, and the presentation about FORVA was inspiring.

Sunday I had the pleasure of paddling again with amazing people on the Glade Creek section of the New.

HUGE thanks to Coastals and all who help me in so many ways! Terri

Hopefully this link will take you to some photos on the Cranberry at S-turn. My lens got fogged up partway through, sorry about that.

Nice pics, Ken! Wish I could have taken the Shredder on the Cranberry. . . . . .
