O.C.T. 7/18 & 19 Summer Gathering NRG - MEET @ CAMPGRD!!

Post by Alicia »

I'm coordinating the New River Gorge section for the club weekend and looking forward to it!

See here for other weekend details: http://www.coastals.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14814.

First timers are welcome, but please don't just show up - post here or contact me by PM. We'll also need some NRG veterans, please. Let's meet Sat 10am @ RAY'S CAMPGROUND instead of Visitor Ctr. It's easier to shuffle boats @ the parking lot there than @ the campground. We'll probably do 9am there on Sunday, though that could change.

River & gauge info can be found here: http://www.americanwhitewater.org/conte ... l/id/2418/

Check back here as the time gets closer in regards to levels (I'd prefer under 2.5').

I'm planning to join you Saturday on the lower. It'll be a PFD for me.

I know it sounds sacrilegious, but we can stop doing our rain dances now! West Virginia has been booming, w/ more rain in the forecast.

The Fayette Station gauge is about 3' now, with more water on the way. Since AW doesn't always update in a timely fashion, you might be interested to check the Thurmond gauge on USGS, and multiple x 1.33, then subtract 4.66 to get the Fayette Station gauge:
http://waterdata.usgs.gov/wv/nwis/uv/?s ... 0060,62614.

For a club trip w/ 1st timers, I'd actually prefer no more than 2'.

So, please check back here for updates Thurs eve. And please let me know if you're coming - both 1st timers & we need some NRG-veterans.

Thanx!

Looks like the Richwood, WV area might be a good option this weekend. It is flooding now.

I plan on joining you on Saturday and possibly Sunday. I have run the gorge twice, once at 0' and once at -1'

Im in on the Gorge as well. Will be a PFD for me. Unless there are nearby rivers/creeks running still from the recent rains like John/Linda has pointed out.

New water levles

Post by Brendan »

Alicia- so if I follow your instructions about the gauge, it looks like the current level is 4.3 feet- If the level is above 3 feet for Saturday will you call the OCT on the gorge off and have a plan B for other options?

Your math is correct.

As for planning for Sat - it's too soon to tell - gauges are high & rain is in the forecast. The Greenbrier has 11K that will dump into the New, plus more rain this week, so no telling what the Gorge will be for the weekend. I will not lead a club trip w/ 1st timers in the Gorge over 2-2.5'. As for a Plan B, it's also too soon to tell. Right now, the Cranberry, Meadow & Cherry are high, but could hopefully be in play. Also maybe the Gauley above the dam (fyi, the Lower Gauley has 20K!). I welcome the input of other paddlers w/ experience on those to chime in as the week progresses.

Should have some better ideas Wed evening, & hopefully a tentative plan Thurs eve. I will be driving up Fri eve. Please bear in mind it's also possible we won't know for sure what we're running til Sat AM. Having water should not be seen as a negative! We will find some fun!

Sat III/IV trip

Post by Hobby »

Hey Alicia,

I'll be there for the Saturday trip. I'm shredding, so whatever class III/IV river we do is good with me. If anyone is doing the New that day, and first timers are not, I'd be up for that if its not toooooo juicy. First timer is riding on the shredder with me.

SAT AM MEETING PLACE CHANGED!!!

Post by Alicia »

Since it's going to be hard to predict what to paddle, I'm changing the Sat 10am meeting place to Ray's Campground (rather than the Visitor Ctr). This puts us closer to some other options.

BTW, the Gorge is now @ 9' w/ more water on the way.

I am aiming to be at the campground on Sat AM. If I come in on Sat AM, I probably won't make it to the meeting at 8 am, but will get there between 9 and 10 am.

With all the water in WV this week, it is a rare opportunity for those of us who don't paddle in the winter to hit some whitewater in central WV, so I am planning to be there. And this much rain in July is definitely unusual!

I am open to whatever is class III - IV that I can get down rowing the shredder - or trying to find someone who wants to R-2 with me.

Another option for paddling is the Bluestone River from Eads Mill to Pipestem. I think a minimum level is around 600 - 700 cfs, but not real sure. My favorite level is around 1100 - 1500 cfs - which it is unlikely to be. I'm not sure where that falls with the foot gauge that is on the AW website. I've done both the upper section (Spanishburg to Eads Mill) and the lower section (Eads Mill to Pipestem). The upper is class I-II with one class III+. The lower is class III-III+ for 2 - 4 miles, then class II to the Tram. Pipestem access requires use of the tram, so if the tram is not running, then the takeout is not available.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the water does!

Thanx for the Bluestone info, Andrea. As you say, we are just going to have to wait & see. The good news is we will have options that aren't usually available in warm weather. I will still aim to run a class 3/4 trip but I just can't predict what river it will be on.

Please let me know if you are coming & please be on time to MEET 10AM @ THE CAMPGROUND. There may be more than 1 trip running. Options may include the Top Gauley, Cherry, Cranberry, Williams, Meadow, & big water on the Upper New sections. Some of these are technical streams rather than the big water on the NRG. I do not think the New Gorge will be low enough.

Looking forward to it!

I plan to attend.

I did a little gauge geeking this evening and things in WV are showing signs of calming down a bit. It complicates planning but it's nice to have options.
