OCT - Stony Creek Rendezvous, May 17 & 18th

Post by Barb »

Hi all,

I'm coordinating a trip up to the Stony Creek Rendezvous, near Johnstown, PA on May 17th & 18th. There's camping at Greenhouse Park, site of all the festivities for the weekend: http://thestonycreek.com/greenhouse.shtml . Check out the Benscreek webpage: http://benscreekcanoeclub.com/rendezvous/ and the Rendezvous facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Stonycre ... 8720752987

Nancy and Wayne Powel will be helping me with this trip, as this is their home river. They'll be calling the shots on what rivers we do. Here is what Nancy wrote:
My thoughts for Saturday and Sunday are the normal Stony Canyon - Class 3 - all the way to Greenhouse Park. Those that are not comfortable with the Canyon can join us for the 3.5 mile section of Carpenter Park to Greenhouse Park which is class 2 - 2+. Moving flat water people will be able to find others who just want to do the Greenhouse Park to downtown Johnstown section. If we have good rain several other options open up including several sections of Shade Creek (class 3) and if we have high water Clear Shade (Class 1-3), and Paint (class IV+). I won't be going on Paint, but I can hook people up with those that will be running it. We haven't had a Rendezvous where those creeks ran for a long time, so we are due.
The canyon is a very ledgy river, with drops and holes to avoid. Here are some good descriptions of the river: http://thestonycreek.com/boating.shtml

We'll probably put in on the Canyon section between 11 and 1pm both Saturday and Sunday.

Let me know if you're interested.

I'll be there and plan to do the downriver race on Sunday too.
I haven't been with Coastals long, but would be up for paddling/hanging by the campfire with those who are there.

Wish I could make the May 17-18 trip, will try for 5/31-6/1

Really glad you posted this trip because we totally forgot about Stonycreek releases happening every two weeks (assuming the valve is working)

Cannot make this coming week due to family commitments but will be shooting for 5/31 - 6/1 release weekend.

Anyone who might want to meet up there that weekend please post.

I assume there are plenty of paddlers each release weekend, especially if weather is good and maybe enough water for other good local streams like Shade.

Been trying to catch this river for several years. Determined to make it this time.

Don.

Kevin, I'm not sure who else will be at the campground. No one yet has told me that they are going. I've got some stuff going on and may not be able to make it, but let me know if you need any help. If I go, I'll be staying with Nancy and Wayne, who live nearby.

Machias, I don't know anything about 16 foot catarafts. Nancy thought maybe it would be ok, but didn't have any experience with them either.

Anyone else thinking about going up, let me know and I'll help you meet up with Nancy and Wayne.

I'm headed that way for the weekend. I don't have much of a plan yet (typical...) Probably head North on Thursday, paddle Friday/Sat/Sun. Figure I'll do the sleep in the car at the festival thing.

Supposed to rain all week. Paint creek looks like fun...

rafts and shredders on the Stony

Post by nanpowel »

There is a local company that does raft trips down the Stony

http://www.coaltubin.com/rafting.html

I highly recommend them, they are great people. Lots of private boaters raft and shred the canyon, but most of the local people I know who shred it are in the Airtight Inflatable Shredders, and I don't know how they compare to a 16' cataraft.

Saturday Wayne and I will probably be putting on at 10:00 to try to avoid the crowds. Our telephone number is 509 two two 0 nine 7 one 5. We usually put in at the Foustwell Bridge where 601 crosses the river, and paddle all the way to Greenhouse Park since the usual take out at Carpenters Park has turned into a giant cluster shuttle mess during busy release weekends. Continuing on to Greenhouse Park adds about 3.5 miles but it moves along reasonably quickly and when you take out at Greenhouse Park you a "there".

I contacted the coal tubin folks and they advised me not to bring my cataraft up unless there was at least 6 feet of water. The release gets it up to 4. You guys have a safe and fun trip.

I am definitely not going to be going up to Stony Creek this weekend. Sorry to back out, but hopefully everyone that needs to can hook up with Nancy Powel. As I said previously, I'd be glad to help if you need it. But you can also "pm" Nancy.
