OCT: Saturday Feb 8 - Goshen Pass

Post by JDzielak »

Who: Coastals members and guests who wants to paddle the pass and PFDs with appropriate resume. Please email me with the button below if you would like to PFD.

What: Goshen Pass on the Maury River AW description and level here.

When: 11:00 2/8/14

Where: Ledges Takeout Coordinates: 37.9004, -79.41

Why: Its a classic Virginia gem. Plan is to make a full lap and then take some meat laps as time allows.

Level Dependent: I'm planning on running this trip if the level is over 450 CFS on the Rockbridge Baths gauge. This is below what I would usually require to drive up there but hey... its an OCT. 1000CFS is prime. Above 1500 CFS it starts to get pushy and more continuous.

Contact me with the email button below if you have any other questions. Post here if you are planning on going.

I'll be coordinating a shuttle from RVA meeting at the park & ride off the Rockville exit on 64. Please contact me if you would like a ride. This will be departing at 8:30.

Pray for rain this week!

It's a little early to predict water levels for Saturday but it looks quite promising. Maybe a smidge beefy, maybe not.

I plan to be in the area regardless and would like to join in.

If it works out that John has enough coverage and if folks are interested in running from Indian Pool to Rockbridge Baths (a step down in difficulty from the full Pass) then I'm game for spinning that idea off too.

Cheers,

Gromit and I are in. Level depending, I may opt for the lower bit Ken mentioned.

I'd like to go but only on the less demanding section. I'd come from Blacksburg and it would be a big help if I could carpool.

Goshen Saturday

Post by kat!e »

I'm in - level depending for Goshen!

Also thinking about camping Saturday night at Peaceful River Campground on the Bull Pasture. Anyone else interested? We will need lots of firewood and probably whisky drinks.

It looks... cold. But that's pretty standard for this run this time of year. Level looks like it's going to hold. It's actually not dropping as it should which has me scratching my head. Maybe there is still some snow somewhere. I'm hoping for a level between 700 and 1000. That should be PFD friendly and moderately boofalitious.

Please note that as of a couple years ago you need a fishing license or day use permit to put in at the swinging bridge. I've been putting in short which cuts out what little moving "flat" water there is in this run but presents a limited put in parking area. We'll see how this plays oout. I'd personally like to put in short. The game plan should be to take as few cars to the Putin as possible.

As to water level head-scratching I don't think they are particularly fiddling with the dam. I look here

http://waterdata.usgs.gov/va/nwis/uv/?s ... 2620,00062

which is natural flow above the confluence. Similar flow curve. There was a minor rain event in the area which seems to have flattened out the curve.

I purchase a fishing license each year for $23 here

http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/licenses/

and view it as a contribution to the wildlife management area program. This gives me access to the put in along with lovely hikes up Laurel Run and more. It also enables the fish to laugh at me should I ever actually dunk a hook into the water. I'm also fine with putting in further downstream.

Local TV (not local for me, I get it online) is calling for a possible 1" of snow and a high of 41. It will probably be a little cooler than that in the Pass.

John, hope I'm not over-stepping here but Rob met me at the New River Rendezvous last year and I have an email thing happening with him. Okay by you if we pick him up at Indian Pool? My thought would be for me to take him all the way to Rockbridge Baths. We can do a sorta sub-shuttle with minimal hassle to you.

Cheers,

Ken

we will be there.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming....WOW What a ride! . . . . . Trying to live up to this, Priceless. As long as you have good insurance!

I may opt for the middle/lower option as one source shows a high of 36 here. And that's probably not til later in the afternoon. TBD.

As far as camping goes - Gromit and I would be happy to host those who prefer an indoor fire and whiskey in a glass. All dogs and most people are welcome. Mangles has dibs on the bed, but we still have some luxurious cots and plenty of floor space. We'll be there Friday and Saturday nights. Join us!
