O.C.T. July 20 Maury below Goshen Pass moving to this Sat.

Post by bambam »

Edit Sat. a.m. for clarity: Please don't just show up for this one. It will take some coordinating. Water levels took an unexpected sudden drop yesterday. I have an email loop going with folks who expressed an interest. Please read the whole thread.

We are talking about the section from Indian Pools to wherever. I won't be in town on 7/20 as noted in an earlier post.

As usual water levels matter but I'm hoping for good ones for Saturday.

The thought here is to completely complicate Alicia's weekend

http://coastals.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12839

by throwing in extra variables ... , er, not really, it rather seems like a nice opportunity to host folks who might like to step things up a bit from the section below Rockbridge Baths.

With good flows (which I expect) I view the section below Rockbridge Baths as class II which tries to get to class III but doesn't quite get there. The section below Indian Pool gets there. You can run-and-gun it, maybe, but catching eddies here and there gets more important (and a lot more fun). There aren't any major drops nor horrible hazards but some rapids are quite long and involve a good bit of maneuvering. Again at ordinary flows, there are holes which deserve respect in terms of getting flipped but which aren't particularly retentive of people.

==========================

We'll need to figure out the timing. Think mid-afternoon at Indian Pool. The thought is that I'll help out on Alicia's trip through the Pass and then pick up anyone interested in joining us below Indian Pool. Probably around 2:30 p.m. [Sat. a.m. edit: Wherever we end up 2:30 is not the meeting time, rather, the time we expect to be ready to put in. Please don't just show up for this one.]

Please don't just show up for this one. It will take some coordinating.

Post here or send me a message through this board if interested.

Cheers,

Ken Dubel

Rockfish

Post by TerryLRK »

Hey, Ken,

Count me in, too. This would be terrific for me just now! And Barb vouches for it being worth waiting for and a rare-ish opportunity.

Always gotta love a Barb endorsement.

TerryLRK: I'm guessing your "Rockfish" subject line got carried over from something else?

We should gauge-geek tomorrow (Friday) but it's looking good so far.

Yes! I'd love to try Indian Pools in my new IK! (But only because I too have received some endorsements! That said, Ken please don't hesitate to tell me "Not this time, Terri" if you think I would be too much work for you...) I am up for running through to Copper Road if anyone else is interested. THANKS! Terri

Post by Dake »

I would love to join you,if the water holds. From the ledges down seems to need more water as its wider in several spots than from R.B down If there is water we would go from ledges to copper rd . Hope awa is wrong about it loosing 14 cfs an hour. If less than 450 a juicy Balcony perhaps.SYOTR Dake

Water-level-wise, I wish we were running this one today! (Friday) We should be good to go down to 2.7 feet USGS. 2.7 will still go but it starts getting bumpy. I think we'll have more than that.

I'm getting an email loop going on this one. Barb and Terri are already in it. Terry LRK, I sent you a test email. Dake, oddly enough I don't seem to have an address for you. Please send me a message through this board or shoot me an email.

Woo hoo!

May be in for Maury below Pass.

Post by dkeller »

Hoping the water drop slows down.

10 cfs/hr average for past 6 hours.

Would put it at about 500 cfs for noon tomorrow.

May be 2 or 3 of us interested.

Please post any updates as you get them.

Alicia and I did an evening run of the Pass down to the ledges and were surprised by the water level as we hadn't checked it at work. Evidently they choked back a couple hundred cfs from the dam on the Little Calfpasture.

We REALLY could have used that extra 200 cfs! Exploring options.

Heading to Cherry in WV

Post by dkeller »

Yeah, it looked like it was going to get pretty low.

My son and I are headed for the Cherry in WV (Richwood down to Gauley). Should be good level for fun Class 2+ (3-) run.

Good luck and thanks for posting plans even if they did not work out.

Don.

Hi Greg.

It depends on what you consider "ok". It will be pretty low, lower than most folks want. Slower but tight and technical.

The water level has held well since yesterday's sudden dam-induced drop. I am waiting to hear from interested parties to see where / if they want to go. I will be running the Pass regardless during Alicia's earlier trip.
