O.C.T. Sat. 3/23 Goshen Pass clean-up/cookout/paddle

Post by Alicia »

Please mark your calendars for this annual fun & worthwhile event!

We will meet @ the Rockbridge Baths P.O. on Rt. 39 on Sat, 3/23, @ 10am. Please do NOT park in front of or adjacent to the P.O. I'll distribute lovely orange vests & trash bags. Then we'll drive upstream, stagger our parking, & pick up all the trash we can alongside Rt. 39 & down towards the river where possible. Please bring gloves. I also recommend long pants & long sleeves due to pesky poison ivy. About noon, we'll head back to my house in RB for a cookout, courtesy of the Coastals' Recognition program.

In past years, we've had enough water to then run 1 or 2 sections of the Maury - the Pass [Advanced], Indian Pools down [intermediate] &/or below the P.O. [low intermediate]. Hoping for water again this year. If not, Balcony Falls is always available as a back-up (35 minute drive from RB).

To help with my shopping list for the cookout, PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY THURSDAY, 3/21, IF YOU ARE COMING. However, if you decide to come @ the last minute, you'll still be quite welcome, but I won't be able to promise you a big lunch.

Thanks in advance for doing some good river karma work - last year we had 19 volunteers & collected 31 bags of trash. While I hope there's less trash this year, I also hope we have more volunteers.

My farmer neighbor is once again donating his beef for the burgers. Hoping, of course, for water in the Maury - fingers crossed.

Please let me know you're coming by Thursday to help w/ my shopping & picking up bags & vests. Many thanks.

Mangles will be getting trashy at the Goshen Pass Clean Up.   :D
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming....WOW What a ride! . . . . . Trying to live up to this, Priceless. As long as you have good insurance!

Hey Alicia,
I'm thinking of coming up from Raleigh. Question about running the river afterwards (assuming enough water)... Do you think people will be bombing it? I've never done it, not sure how long it takes, and would prefer to have enough time to enjoy it. Not sure if this is the best day to do that, with the cleanup, cookout, etc, (although that sounds fun, too!)...?

Thanks for organizing,

-dana (from WAS a couple years ago)

FYI on level & weather

Post by Alicia »

Hi, Dana - yes, we will have water! Should be a quite adequate level (estimating 2.7'/600 cfs USGS) & not bad for 1st timers. We may well have splinter groups that do short laps vs. others who do a 2-2.5 hr run (not bombing). Plus we may well have another group doing a section below the Pass that's more intermediate. So, lots of choices! We typically finish lunch about 1pm & shuttles are easy, so likely put on 1:30ish.

Weather should be high 40s on Sat (but lower 30s & snow on Sun).

I expect a good time to be had by all, plus the good karma of picking up trash is already working in our favor w/ the water holding.

So, Dana - please feel welcome to join!
