Learn how

Post by Dirk5455 »

I fish at Reedy quite often and would like to learn how to whitewater kayak.
How do I get started?

Taking a class is probably the best way, as it does away with a lot of expensive and painful trial and error.

Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation are the ones I know about, but the 2012 season is over. There are pool kayak samplers available this winter, but the 2-day beginner whitewater class (starting next May) is your best bet. Call Greg at (804) 748-1124. Disclaimer: I work for Chesterfield.

I don't know if Nantahala Outdoor Center ( NOC) has any classes left this year, but that means travelling to western North Carolina.

Additional Information available HERE. There were some 2 day introduction classes offered by Coastals in the spring that were positive and well received. They will likely be repeated next spring. Stay tuned and watch the newsletter for more information!

If you have the right gear for cold weather, (a wetsuit or dry suit) there is still time. Ive only done the upper James once, but if your willing to drive some, the Rappahannock is great for beginners. It's mostly flat water, but there are several small rapids along the way.
I usually post when I'm able to get out. Just reply on those post if you want to join.
