O.C.T. New River Rendezvous at Labor Day

Post by bambam »

What?

This is a loosely organized multi-club trip to the New River in West Virginia. It has been going on annually for longer than anyone actually seems to know. We meet, loosely, in the mornings, split up for various trips, go boating, find our ways back to camp, and then lie about what we did. Lather, rinse, repeat. Feel free to just show up. It's loosely organized -- we won't be keeping track of who is joining in anyway.

Who?

Practiced novice to expert. We'll have easier trips on upper sections of the New plus more difficult ones on the New River Gorge. If we don't have any spare water we do come up a little short on intermediate trips. If we do have spare water (kinda rare), ..... , woo hoo!

If you are new to this event please don't feel intimidated. Feel free to contact me with questions.

I always forget to mention someone so please don't be offended. Monocacy, Coastals, Greater Baltimore, WV Wildwater. This year we'll be on the Carolina schedule too. Feel free to cross post this on BRV and CCA.

When?

Folks start rolling in to the campground Friday night, August 31st. Most paddle on Saturday and Sunday. The more hard-core paddle Monday as well before heading home. The kickoff meeting on Saturday is at ten o'clock to give folks a chance to get there if not arriving Friday night.

Where?

The designated spot is Ray's Campground on Sunday Road near Hico. 304-658-4386. You do not need to reserve if tenting on a non-electric site. You do need to reserve if you want more luxury. Hico is at the intersection of routes 19 and 60. Sunday Road heads north from the western edge of that intersection (got that?). Ray's is a few miles up the road on the left and is well-marked.

There should be a Tucker or two coming up for the weekend. Hopefully at least two.

Ken.....I was hoping that perhaps you could expound a little more on the organizational structure of the weekend.

Looks like there may be one Saylor and one Sweet P attending this event as well.

Update

Post by bambam »

Multi-club folks like me will see this message in various places.

At the risk of nosing over into the realm of "mildly organized" (gasp!) rather than "loosely organized" (ahhh), I note word on the street is that Ed "Mr. Lucky" Evangelidi will not be joining us this year. It's probably my fault. If not, I'll shoulder the blame anyway. Point being, Ed has run trips on upper sections of the New during this event for years for the folks not wanting to run the gorge.

In earlier years I've committed to running a trip on an upper section on Saturday in order to guarantee trips happen up there and I will renew that offer now. With that said I sure would like it if someone would step up and take that task on as I have a raft-load of sweaty fun athletic women who, can you believe it, trust me enough to want to raft the gorge with me.

An "upper" trip will happen on Saturday, one way or another. After that, at minimum, new friends will have been made and trips will happen.

Hero status is just a few keystrokes away.

All good fun,

I'm headed up Friday evening, paddling Saturday possibly taking the family down the upper New on Sunday, and most likely paddling Monday as well.

Anybody have a spare ducky (or something of that nature) that I could borrow for Sunday? I need to scrounge up one more boat for my wife to paddle down the upper.

I kneel before you m'lady. No really, I can't stand up. Could you please help me out of my boat?

level for upper new

Post by ned ormsby »

Just checked the AW levels for the upper new and it's at 2.45 "below recommend" any one have any feedback about paddling the upper at 2.45? My son and I were hoping to kayak the upper or jump a ride in a raft for the gorge if anyone has spots available. SYOTR.

We're paddling Sat - Mon. The Gorge is low but I've run it lower, & we might get some rain. Sorry I don't know levels for the upper New, but I've never heard of it being too low to get down. Also, sorry, Bob, I don't have a boat to loan.

Looking fwd to seeing folks!
