O.C.T. Labor Day New River Rendezvous

I'd love to join you since you plans to go to the NOC fell through for this weekend.
I'm a beginner paddler with Class I/II experience. Do you think there will be some runs appropriate for my experience level on this trip?
I'd like to come down Friday and I don't take up much room with my tent cot.

I replied to your email too:
The rapids on the upper sections of the New in WV tend to be what I'd call bigwater II's. Typically the river necks down, the current picks up, you hit a wave train, and get dumped into a deep pool. If the river is up then these waves get big. The river is not up and I don't expect that to change.
The short answer is I think folks will be expecting more class II than class I / II. AW gets sloppy with those ratings. I just read the rapids descriptions for the upper James in Richmond and don't get why it's not rated a full II.
By the way, the III designations on the New consist of one or two rapids per section and these can be snuck.
Cheers,
Ken

Ken,
Yes, it was the Lower Yough that i paddled....I just don't want to do anything more difficult, but am okay with equal levels, and depending on the water levels...So where at Ray's does one find the group? I'll probably come in on Friday evening...small tent. Do people eat at camp or go out? Do we share round, or cook individually? Could someone make hot water for me? (don't have a cook set yet).

Terry,
I noted that there is a Country Breakfast available at the campsite by reservation:

I bet you could get coffee there.

campground details
The NRR folks pretty much take over the campgrd. Ken will likely have a colorful shirt on & he has a red, salt & pepper beard. The gang often has a campfire going behind the office. Some folks cook there, individually; others go out to eat in Fayetteville. Expect some waits @ the local favorite haunts, eg. Pies & Pints (but boy, the pizza's good).
In the AMs, Ken or Mike Sawyer will likely gather folks together to figure out trips & shuttles. Don't be shy if you're new - we'll break into smaller groups on the Gorge, @ least, & promise not to leave anyone behind.
Ken & I are coming up Sat AM - looking fwd to it!

The Sedona Cantina and Tapas (formerly Sedona Cafe) has relocated south of Fayetteville on WV 16. ph 304-574-3411. My wife thought it excellent as the Sedona Cafe several years ago. I just looked at their menu and frankly I did not find many things for my taste. Look for yourself before you go at www.sedonacantina.com

Bringing raft for Saturday and Sunday. If someone needs raft ride on those days I have brought two extra paddles and one extra life vest. My plan is to go to the putin Saturday morning to inflate the raft so that we will be at the putin early. Contact me by cell phone to let me know how many will be riding with me.bambam wrote:Bring a jacket. A cold front is coming through. Expect highs in the seventies (and warm water) and lows in the low fifties. Warmer Monday.
