2010 Gauley Fest Trip

Post by Dave K »

CAMPING:

I blew it this year and even with 4 months advance notice was unable to get the Burnwood campground.  But don’t worry little huckster because I was able to get another group site at another campground.

This year, we will be at Mountain Lake Campground ( http://www.mountainlakecampground.com/ ). I’ve gotten sites 231 (regular site) and 232 (group site). They are next to each other and should be big enough to hold all of us (maybe). All are welcome. Just show up.

I’ve reserved these sites for Friday (9/17/10) and Saturday (9/18/10) nights – checking out Sunday. I had to lay down some cash up front to get these sites so I’m going to ask everyone for $5 / night / person to (hopefully) recover my cost. When you check in at the campground, tell them you are with me / the Coastals. The campground is going to charge an additional $7 / person / night (except for the first 6 people who are covered under the reservation fees I’ve already paid). Confused?

Do not Google the address on the website – it will give you wrong directions. To get there take 60 west and then go north on Rt. 19 towards Summersville. After you cross over the Hughes Bridge (over Summersville Lake), take the first left towards the Summersville Airport. Follow signs to check in at the office. If you get to Summersville, you went too far north on 19.

There’s no shelter so if it looks like rain, consider bringing your EZ Up tarp thingy.

BOATING:

LOWER GAULEY FRIDAY:
I’m running the Lower Gauley the Friday of Gauley Fest. First timers with qualified resumes are welcome but should contact me first at dave dot kessmann at fgwa (period) com. Safety boaters would be much appreciated.

Let’s figure on meeting in the parking lot of the Food Land in Gauley Bridge at noon on Friday. The Food Land is on Rt. 60 on the left just before you get to the intersection of 60 and 39 in Gauley Bridge. It is a good sized grocery store. You won’t miss it.

NEW RIVER GORGE SATURDAY:

We are meeting at the Mountain Lake Campground at 9:30 am Saturday to run the New River Gorge. If it is your first time, contact me (dave period kessmann at fgwa period com) so we can make sure this is the trip for you. Veterans are welcome to just show up but DO NOT be late. There is some chance they might not let you in the campground which means you will miss the trip so your best bet is to camp with us.

This trip is quite large and has only been successful in the past because we have split up in to smaller groups. If you are interested in leading or safety boating for a few folks, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Another key factor to this trip’s success is having a concurrent trip on the Upper New (Thurmond to Cunard) so we can work out the PRO shuttle. I have secured the services of the infamous Matt Laschalt (Hazmat) to coordinate this trip.  Matt has posted his trip here:

This is the sixth year for this trip and I’m looking forward to it. This is how it went down in years past:

Just so I'm clear about the camping

Post by Mikeljcarr »

With the exception of the first 5 folks; camping will be $12 per person, per night... Right?

Right. You give me $5 / person / night for the money I already paid for the group site  and then you give the campground $7 / person / night. Thanks.

I'll be there. Planning on LG Friday / NRG Saturday. Sunday is TBD.

Dave - Thanks for arranging the campground and organizing. You got your ride covered? If not, I can swing by the 'Burg and pick you up. Let me know.
Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke

Thanks a bunch but Shannon has me covered to get up there. I might need some help getting back depending on what we do Sunday. We will see.

Great. You can take Greg, Guy, and me down Sunday. Word on the street is one of us is being a big giatnt kitty kat about it. I don't want to name any names but it starts with a 'G' and ends with a 'uy'. (I'd be scared, too if I was taking a Rev down. ) Getting us down shouldn't be a problem for you with your sik L5 ACA skilz.

Thanks.

Envelope – Free stationary taken from the Marriott while on a business trip.
Snowflake address label – sent to me free and had to be used up.
Stained glass stamp – It was more then three feet away from me when I decided to get them so you know I didn’t see them clearly
Butterfly and Sunflower stickers on the back – Also free and required because the glue on the envelope was so old it no longer stuck.

We're definitely in for LG Friday and NRG Saturday. We'll have to see what looks good for Sunday. I need to know two things. First, what is Guy's favorite vodka. (I owe him a birthday present.) Second, how do we claim top 5 status? (I'm too cheap to pay an extra $5 if I can get out of it!) Just in case it's this easy...

I'm in for the LG run on Friday...

Rev 0 of the rest of the weekends plan:

Saturday will probably head to B-burg for the game (GO HOKIES) and then return for the remainder of the fest saturday evening.

Sunday/Monday I'd be up for another LG run and/or jump on someone's private raft for a UG run.

Is anyone thinking about driving out Thursday pm after work? Nothing like sitting in a little metal box for 3-4 hours in the morning to get you warmed up for sitting in an even smaller plastic box for the rest of the day... :?

I will be there though i am not sure if i should do the gorge or the upper. I have done the Lower Yough several times and am very comfortable on that size of rapids. What do you think?

First of all you don't need to buy me any potato juice, but thanks.

But for the record and any vodka drinkers out there Luksusowa is a fantastic and cheap vodka.
