O.C.T. Labor Day New River Rendezvous
Cross-posting, sorta, from the Monocacy Canoe Club message board.
Yes, the umpteenth loosely organized New River Rendezvous is intended to happen over Labor Day weekend. Central camping will happen at Ray's Campground near Hico, West Virginia. Reservations are not required unless you want a cabin or want to sleep in something which isn't a tent.
Feel free to simply show up for this one. There is no need to contact me in advance but it is fun to hear from folks -- please post here.
This is a multi-club trip which pretty much just works out without any real clear leadership. You show up, folks meet in the mornings for trips discussions, mayhem happens, river trips are born, folks have fun days.
River trips will happen Saturday, Sunday, and Monday with difficulties of practiced novice and up. I will commit to running a trip on Saturday on an easier section of river if nobody else steps up to do that. (For the past several years someone has stepped up so I end up on the gorge.) This gives newbies a chance to meet people and learn the terrain.
If you are new to the New, please feel especially welcomed. Start here:

and look for stuff like this:

and this:

There are plenty of non-boating activities in the area as well. Information on the park can be found here:

New River trip over Labor Day weekend
Hi, Ken,
I'm new to the New and these trips, and want to confirm that there would be someone's lead to follow for the upper on Sat and/or Sun. I did two runs on the Yough over 21-22 Aug, [enjoyed day two--only one swim-- more than day one
], and a friend suggested the Upper New might be good for me--i.e. Class II-III. Do I have the details right?
I'd be camping at Ray's.
Thanks!

Jann and I are planning to get there Friday and leave Monday. what time on those days is still to be decided.
We are playing around with the idea of paddling the Glade Creek section of the New on Friday.
and we're hoping that enough good souls bring rafts so we can be part of crew on one on the gorge one day. We had a crew of 4 women/1 man and Ken driving last year. what a hoot!

Hello TerryLRK. There will be a trip on an upper section on Saturday. If nobody else steps up then I will do it. After that there have always been plenty of folks around to run trips on upper sections on Sunday and Monday. Assuming you refer to the lower Yough in Ohiopyle then you will find the upper sections of the New to be easier than that (at normal water levels). See you at Ray's!TerryLRK wrote:Hi, Ken,

I take it Barney is Richard's raft's name? Looking forward to your PFD -- wasn't implying anything, see below.Rock Magnet wrote:Going to do a PFD in the kayak. I hadnt given any thought about bringing Barney.
Over the past few years we've had the privilege of having private rubber on the gorge on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Again, loosely organized, no guarantees, but typically we've been able to get a bunch of folks on the gorge in rafts who wouldn't ordinarily get to see it while surrounded by friends in yaks and canoes. So, yeah, if yer up for it, bring the raft!YeOldeAndDecrepite wrote:
I was only going to bring a canoe and a kayak. If needed I can bring a raft?
