Cheatfest Weekend - Oar Rig Adventure - Lower Yough

Post by Mango »

Sunday, 11:am, on the Lower Yough
River Level 2.4'
Temp Mild, Foggy and Rainy
Kayakers:
Wallace and Gromit
JR
Shannon
Justin
Giggles
PaddleCat with Oar Rig
Mango

After getting a frame and oar rig for the Mangles PaddleCat, I decided that,
after 2 warm ups runs on the James, that I was ready to tackle the Lower Yough.
The rest of the group came along to witness the event, and with no doubt, hopes of seeing some carnage.
The river was a little higher than normal, which padded out Entrance Rapid and made the river a little pushier.
The pictures attached are from Cucumber Rapid. My line was a little right of my entended goal.
Although I thought that I was in for sure, fate was on my side this time. :D
After making adjustments to the oars, that Justin suggested, I had better control after Cucumber and no further incidents to report.

Thanks to everyone for your support and pro-shuttle! :D

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming....WOW What a ride! . . . . . Trying to live up to this, Priceless. As long as you have good insurance!

Adjustments? Like keeping the left one out from under your knee?

Nice photo series / trip report, thanks.

As Guy says, "The clean lines don't make the headlines".

Pictures were taken by the Ohiopyle Adventure Photography person who
is always sitting on the rocks at Cucumber.

The under the knee thing was something I came up with on my own,
wasn't Justin's suggestion. Took awhile for him and Giggles
to stop laughing before he could make any suggestions.

Not a pink hat, must be the lighting  ......not that there's anything wrong with that.......

Big thanks to all that made this weekend possible for me, especially Wade for the boats... Good to see everyone that made it up and paddle with you all.

As always, thanks to Dave KessmanN for hosting....

Yeah, a huge thanks to KessmanN for another great time at the Triple K. And to everyone else that cooked, shuttled, cleaned, and helped out. :D
Envelope – Free stationary taken from the Marriott while on a business trip.
Snowflake address label – sent to me free and had to be used up.
Stained glass stamp – It was more then three feet away from me when I decided to get them so you know I didn’t see them clearly
Butterfly and Sunflower stickers on the back – Also free and required because the glue on the envelope was so old it no longer stuck.

WOOOT!!! Sadly, I was too busy making my own way thru Cucumber to witness Wade's adventure. Great pix and certainly worth the price!

Gromit and I had a fantastic weekend, too! We should all count ourselves lucky after such a great time spent together. Super big thanks to Erin for setting the shuttle from hell for us to run the Cheat on Saturday and to Justin and JR for doing double shuttle bunny duty on Sunday.

Dave K, we can't wait to get back. Triple K is becoming a hot destination for us!

Great pictures - too bad I was busy preping for my cucumber swim to see it in person. But I was there for the Hoots of laughter from Giggles as she scrolled through them at the shop....

Another awesome time at the Triple K. Thanks Dave

Great accomodations, pro shuttles on the Cheat and Lower Yough (neither of which I had to run), tasty food, fireless fire circle on the front lawn, and excellant paddling with good friends.

Thanks to all who made it happen, I had a great time and feel sad for anyone that missed it.

Yep, another great weekend. Thanks to KessmanN for the triple K ranch, huge thanks to the shuttlers and to Sue for doggie watching.
Lots of happy memories.
Mango was sporting huge grin while being "oarsome" on the river. The LY was really fun at 2.4 (or whatever it was).
:D

Way to go Mango!!! Firing up the boof line in the paddle cat

I had a GREAT time at the Triple K Cheat Fest weekend!!! A HUGE THANKS to Dave KessmanN for opening up his home to all of us and for leading the way down this weekend. Many thanks to all the shuttle drivers, cooks, and handy-folks that painted, wired, hung doors, etc. in the down time. It was great to see and hang out with everybody this weekend.

I scored three PFD's this weekend: Middle Fork of the Tygart on Friday, Upper Yough on Saturday, and Cheat Canyon on Sunday. I can't imagine a better way to spend a boating weekend!!! I'm already looking forward to next year!
Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke
