O.C.T.-North Branch of Potomac-4/30 & 5/1

Post by Dave Lewis »

The North Branch of the Potomac is a "Dam Release" event and the expected flow will be 1000 cfs. The water is cold and fast. Several large rapids with big holes, but nothing really technical. Swims could be long and cold. This is an "intermediate level" trip. You will need warm paddling gear, helmet , in addition to boat control. We will meet at the takeout in Barnum at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, and 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Expected weather is partly cloudy, 30 % chance of rain, highs near 60.

Call or email me no later than Thursday, April 28 if you plan to go. I can be reached at 434-296-0854 (Leave a message and I will get back to you).

Directions from the Charlottesville area are as follows:

[b]Directions to Barnum:

I64 west to I81
I81 North to the Mauzy exit (this will be about 10 miles north of Harrisonburg)

Turn left, go about 100 yards and turn right on Rt. 259
This will take you thru Broadway, VA. Follow 259 thru Mathias and to Baker.
At Baker turn left on Rt. 28(I think that is the right number, but turn there).

Stay on 28 until you get to Junction. Turn left. This is Rt. 220 which will take you into Moorefield. In Moorefield, turn right at the Sheetz gas station. This will take you to Keyser.

In Keyser, stay on 220 until you cross the Potomac. Take the first left. This will go a couple of blocks and you will turn right on 135. You are about 5 miles from Bloomington.

Follow 135 and at the traffic light in Westernport, go straight. This is still 135. After a couple of miles you will go thru the Westvaco complex. When you get up to where the Savage river is coming in (actually a little before) you will need to turn left , cross the RR tracks and start up a winding road. Another mile or so, RT. 46 will come in from you left. Turn right on 46. Stay on that until you see the turn down to Barnum.

Post by WaterIsGod »

I think that I will be can't confirm but I plan on being out there. I will be coming from I-95 or 29. if there is a better way then going out to 81. Now about the Cold BRING IT ON. The cold has nothing on me I will siwm it just because. No really I think I will take a relaxing class III swim just for fun, maybe during a lunch break. I will bring the 5mm wet suit just in case, other wise it is only a PFD and a spray skirt. I think I might bring the H2 get it on the River for its first real trip with me. We will see ummmm ok bob will it be the S6F or the H2 for 50,000 river carma points.
See yall out there.

All hail the webmistress!!

That webmistress, she's just the bestest
Envelope – Free stationary taken from the Marriott while on a business trip.
Snowflake address label – sent to me free and had to be used up.
Stained glass stamp – It was more then three feet away from me when I decided to get them so you know I didn’t see them clearly
Butterfly and Sunflower stickers on the back – Also free and required because the glue on the envelope was so old it no longer stuck.
