Moormans or Tye - NOT GONNA HAPPEN

Post by slo2rol »

Doesn't look like the hills got the rain that was forecast when this post began  , so we're going to head up to the Rapp and run Motts to F'Burg early Sat AM. See new post in this forum for the details....

You can bet that I'll keep an eye out west and we'll get on the first available water. Sorry for getting anyone's hopes up!

Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke

Moormans

Post by jhartrva »

There has to be A LOT of rain for the Moormans to run. It's a great river that will remind you of NC (at least it does for me). We ran it in August 2007 after a tropical storm event, but that's the last time I've been there.

The only thing you can really do is check the Rivanna gauge since the Moormans feeds into it. If the Rivanna is going up up up, chances are the Moormans is running.

You can search Moormans river gauge on google and get the dam discharge level. You want to look for about 4.5ft and rising on that gauge to start to think about a run. This area has been so dry its a long shot. These are my hometown rivers and I pretty much do anything to get on them, but I am going out of town this weekend if that tells you anything.
Kayak-$1000 dollars...........Gas for the shuttle $60 dollars..........Watching your friends get munched by a bus-sized hole.......PRICELESS.

I think that is wishful thinking

The Tye has going to have to get a pot load of water as dry as it has been .

I want to be headed there to catch them if they do...
Bump!

Straight up is good - but vertical at more than 0.1" an hour would be better! We need about another 2.5 ft on the Free Union Moorman's gage to equal about 1' on Millington bridge gage and five times the current flow for the Tye.

I told you to give up on welding the BigGun and grab a new creeker. If we end up out west, take Pete's Burn - he won't need it to scoop kitty litter! Or you can take my Stretch, but I'm not giving up the Everest!!!

Richard can use my Burn if he likes since it may be couple weeks for me to paddle again. I think i may have injured my wrist while loading a server into a rack last weekand not lifting a bucket of kitty litter. I was helping put one into rack today and experienced even worse pain. i had to go get another xray tonight due to it locking up on me so it may not be simply a sprained wrist anymore.

Sorry Brandon but i was in the emergency room when you call tonight. Definitely out on the fun this weekend.

If the weather channel is right

then there should be water in the mountains Saturday morning. However, these line of storms usually are a hit and miss thing. An early morning trip to the Tye/Moormans could yield a great run or be bummed out. I have traveled to the mountains and have had both occurred. You up for a early morning run to the highlands or what?

Still, TMI, what happens with YOAD, should stay with YOAD
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming....WOW What a ride! . . . . . Trying to live up to this, Priceless. As long as you have good insurance!

I am definitely up for a run to the mountains IF there is water. While the forecasts do show rain overnight for most of the western basin, Accuweather is forecasting little more than a half inch of rain to fall during the night and it took 1"-1.5" inches to get the gages moving to their present locations. If the correlation to the Free Union gage is correct, then the Moormans is a foot below zero on the Millington bridge gage. And while I think we might give the Upper Tye a go at 250cfs, the Tye crested around midnight at 150 cfs and has now fallen off to 89 cfs. Given this info, I doubt the we'll be headed west.

So, what are we going to do... Options:
  • 1) If, at 4am, the Tye is rising and near 250 cfs - lets head west to put on the Upper Tye (Rt 56 - US 29)
    2) If, at 4am, the Moormans @ Free Union is rising and near 5.5 ft, we'll head to C'Ville.
    3) If, at 5am, the Rappahannock near Fredericksburg is still rising and is approaching 3.2ft, we give it a go - not creeking, but it is different plus it gives the James a chance to fill up http://www.americanwhitewater.org/conte ... il_id_961_
    4) The bubble is forecast to start hitting the Westham at about 7am Sat, though experience has shown it usually gets here ahead of the forecast, so a couple laps on the Lower James at 4ft could be an option, though Monday would probably be better (4.5 - 5 ft).
    5) Or, fire up creeking at its best - head to Russell Fork Gorge since it's running  (But I'm too young to die!!! So, this one's not in my playbook yet!)
Of course I'm open to other suggestions...

What no love for the Maury? I would recommend skipping the Moormans and hitting Nelson County or the Maury if we get rain. Last time I ran the Moormans there were trees down. More annoying than dangerous.
