Wallace wrote:Well it looks like the James river is going to have to do for the paddle. The upper section (from Pony Pasture to Reedy Creek) is good for any one. Nothing over class II at the levels currently predicted. The downtown section (from Reedy Creek to 14th Street) is a little bigger bite even at the low levels. If you plan to paddle downtown, please dress for the cold water.

I am planning on running both sections starting shuttle from 14th St. at 10am. We'll pick up those who only want to run the upper section at Reedy Creek and be on our way to Pony Pasture no later than 11am. If you only want to run downtown, try to be at Reedy around 1:30pm. Those of us running straight through will meet you on the river. If you don't see anyone taking out, we aren't there yet, so please wait.

Try not to worry too much about shuttle arrangements. I don't think we've ever left anybody at either the put in or the take out.

If either group gets larger than 10 or so paddlers, we'll break up into smaller groups with a lead and a sweep for each. We can make those game time decisions at the put in for each section. Again, try not to over think these things. We'll work it out so everyone has a fun and safe day on the river.

Please see below for directions and descriptions of the runs. And please use the email or private message buttons to contact me.

AW Pages - USGS Gauge: click here
NOAA Gauge with forecast level: click here

PONY PASTURE: Put in for Upper section.

There is a large parking lot at Pony pasture - *gates are locked after dark.*
There is a restroom facility at this location.
There is a 7-11 on Forest Hill where the Pony Pasture turnoff is.

REEDY CREEK: Put in for Downtown/lower section; take out for Upper section.

The parking area nearest the putin is on the north side of Riverside Drive. There is a drive that goes down steeply from Riverside. It is not recommended to 1. leave any valuables in your car or 2. lock your car or 3. leave your windows up or 3. park in the lot if you choose to do 1 and/or 2 and/or 3. Parking is available on the hill by the houses and the residents put up with a lot from boaters, so please be respectful. Breakins occur in both the lot and on the street. Welcome to Richmond! :)

There is a port-a-potty at this location.

NORTH SHORE (NEAR MAYO ISLAND): Take out for downtown/lower section.

See this link for a map. This is the address for La Difference, a furniture store about 1/10 mile north of the takeout. Going south on 14th, pass La Diff (on left), go to first floodwall gates and turn left immediately after - there is a brown park sign indicating the takeout. Drive about 1/10 mile to the parking lot.

There is a handicap-accessible port-a-potty at this location that smells better than the parking lot.
There are fast food restaurants on 14th Street south of Mayo Island.

Based on this information I'm tempted to move the paddle to Sunday instead of Saturday so more people might come out. Can I get an AMEN!?

Try NOAA weather

I've been using this for years and find it much more reliable for general purposses. Added benifit, non-commercial so you don't get any of the trash/pups/cookies.

I've tried most and always come back. Over time you learn the regional differences in the local climes and can determimne just the right amount of salt to cast. Also has an undetermined number of links/maps/stats that allows you to get lost for hours if your so inclined.

Either day looks fine

So now you don't like cuddly pets or tasty snacks? In the same category as trash. Well, I never.

Also in case anyone's wondering about a meeting, we're still leaning toward 1/26.

How far are you leaning? This water has been beckoning for a while.

Technically the meeting and paddle are separate, so although a precedent has been set to have them on the same day, we could have them on different days.

The plans have been complicated by the fact that the location we were going to use is in use this weekend but is available 2/2. We are looking into restaurant alternatives - if you have any ideas and don't mind researching them before posting (call the place and find out details about having a meeting of 20-50 people 4-7pm 1/26), please let us know. Most restaurants won't allow separate checks for large parties which further complicates it. Maybe Red Lobster and Olive Garden do, but those wouldn't be my first choice.

I will be taking a class on Sunday and wouldn't be able to paddle. We'd paddle on Saturday anyways and could add a second day of paddling to the mix.

If the board decides to have the meeting on Saturday, then we'll paddle that same day. If the board decides to move the meeting to the following weekend, then we'll paddle Sunday instead. How much clearer can this get?
