Middle Cranberry 2/27

Let us know how it went! Swim confessions and carnage reports are welcome, but it's not fair to tell on your buddies!

Middle Cranberry 2/27

Post by bambam »

The Cranberry is way too far for a day trip -- and worth every minute on the road there and back.

Sidenote: I edited my post in the Want to Paddle Now section regarding comparing Devil's Kitchen on the Maury to the Cranberry. I feel that overall the Cranberry is significantly more demanding than Goshen Pass is.

What a hoot. Beautiful day, good company, friendly water level, and we made it through with just a wee bit of harmless carnage.

Out of six boaters we had 3-1/2 first timers. The 1/2 part is because one of them ran it years ago at over six feet (different river). You guys did great.

First skim of photos says I got a few decent ones, we'll see.

All good fun,

Ken,

Glad you guys had a good time. I woke up this morning at 6:30 not feeling well and fell back sleep till I remembered to text you but looking back you may not have had a phone. I did sneek out to the Maury for a second later in the day though...

The drive is too far. That is why sometime we should camp out there and paddle the Williams as well. That's the one over the ridge right?

As far as difficulty between the Kitchen and the Cranberry I think the first third to half of the Cranberry is way steeper and daunting than the Kitchen, because you don't know where it is going to end seeming to drop out of sight around the corner, but not any harder. Just lot of eddies to catch with waves, slots, and drops galore. Oh, and of course fun, fun, fun. Then if you and J. Sells hadn't shown me down the Kitchen and I hadn't run it like 12 times in the last month preping me for the Cranberry I might not feel the same way.

My canoe did turn into a submarine at the last hole in S-Turn causing me to swim for 5 or 10 feet but using the Maury comparison not much worse than Corner in my opinion. The two kayakers who swam from the top in our group made me feel better though.

I've had trouble in the past linking to individual photos using Picasa. Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3.

[Edit] First time through I could only see the first photo. Can you guys see the second one? I'm using the "Img" button and linking to the individual photos, I think. [End edit]

What a Beautiful River!!! Thanks to Ken and Alicia for guiding us down, it was my PFD. The hole on river left in Full nelson looked really sick, so we decided to skirt that one, S turn gave someone a little problem, there were some logs here and there including one that I got way to close to, but no major incidents, overall lots of good white water fun with great people. Thanks again for waiting for me to find that place!!! WOW
