Where did you go in 2007?

Let us know how it went! Swim confessions and carnage reports are welcome, but it's not fair to tell on your buddies!

2007 trips

Post by David »

That's an impressive resume.

I got in some quality fun runs:

twice on Goshen Pass
once on Mill Creek
once on Conway River, once on Hughes River, once on Narrow Passage Creek.
four times on the Nolichucky Gorge - 1st time in December Sunday last
four times on lower James - I know that's a day's worth for some of you
nine trips down New River Gorge - my big goal for the summer was to "get comfortable" on NRG
twice on Big Reed Island Creek and one time on Whitetop Laurel
one trip down Balcony
two trips down Dan River - Kibler dam release
five times on upper Russell Fork and twice on the lower RF (the lower is below the Gorge) - dam release
about ten days paddlin' and playin' and pickin' (up trash) on various parts of New River in Virginia
some roll practice in Hollywood, FL; a couple trips down and up the Loxahatchee River in the same state, and a truly spectacular day on Wekiva Springs River, just north of Orlando. "It's all so beautiful!"
A sweet and sunny December paddle and hike in Congaree National Park.

Thanks to everyone who helps me have fun on the river. Have a great 2008!

I was wondering when / if this would come up. Thanks Juggy.

In spite of working more than I wanted to plus it being such a dry year I managed 83 trips.

PFD's are becoming harder to come by and this year most of mine were mild runs.

Back Fork Elk: Not so mild. A handful of sizable ledges.
Elk above Webster Springs: Nice intermediate run.
Hughes: East of the Blue Ridge. Two-ish. Lots of wood.
James at Seven Islands: With adaptive program. Nice easy run.
Lake Monocan: Again with adaptive program. Gotta love Nelson County.
Lower Pigeon: Pleasant. Probably not a repeat.
Lower Cranberry: See Lower Pigeon.
Middle Meadow: Kinda cool actually. Nothing very difficult but undercuts abound.
Toe Gorge: Headwaters of the Nolichucky. II / III. Pretty on left, not on right. Nice intermediate run.
Tygart Gorge: Nice run, I'd rather hit it halfway down by paddling the Middle Fork River.

In the battle of the boats department it was K-1 54, OC-2 16, OC-1 11, raft 1, shredder 1.

I had three swims plus one partial that I can think of. Contrary to my usual practice of swimming in class I or II I had to pull the cord twice on the Top Yough on separate trips in spots which should not have been any big deal. The third was an OC-2 event at Swimmers on the Lower Yough when I didn't read Alicia's mind properly. I'm getting pretty good at that when above the water but doing so whilst inverted is a work in process.

The partial one was on the Upper Yough. My, ahem, shredder guide, was busy pointing out "Time Warp" on the Upper Yough while ignoring my pleas to please pay attention to Heinzerling just downstream. We ran it backwards through the meat of the hole which of course stopped us cold. He went flying over my head into the drink while I managed to stay aboard. No blood, no foul, turns out a shredder paddles somewhat like a canoe if you straddle the floor while paddling after your buddy.

Looking forward to another year of adventure!

Hmmmmm.... mine's a rookie year but I'll post it on out there for ya'll to jest at....

ten-ish runs on the Upper James.
three runs on the Lower James
Two different sections on the Shenandoah
Parts of the Maury and Confluence (during class)
Parts of the Yough

PFD's??? Everywhere.... Except the Shenandoah. That run was so low there were times I tried to tip the boat over and couldn't.

This year will improve :)
I love the smell of Neoprene in the morning...

Lost a wife, took up kayaking as alternative to early alcoholism - who knew I could have my cake and eat it too? . . .
@ 20 upper James
@ 10-15 lower James
2 at Balcony
1 on James through Seven Islands
1 on Rappahanock
Made a ton of new friends who aren't lawyers
2 days that my cynical, snarky, sarcastic, but beloved teenage mutant daughter-paddler turned to me with a wide grin and said she was having the best time of her life.

All in all, it could have been a lot worse.

lionrampant: WOW!! that is some real stepping up.
Envelope – Free stationary taken from the Marriott while on a business trip.
Snowflake address label – sent to me free and had to be used up.
Stained glass stamp – It was more then three feet away from me when I decided to get them so you know I didn’t see them clearly
Butterfly and Sunflower stickers on the back – Also free and required because the glue on the envelope was so old it no longer stuck.

OK fans here it is:

I ended up with 144 entries on the list. Some may argue whether or not its days on the river, runs, laps, park and play, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. :-P Whatever you want to call it, this is how I do it. 8)
For repeats there were around:

77 Lower James
10 Upper Gauley
8 Z-Dam
8 Upper Yough
5 Upper James
5 Top Yough
3 Cheat Canyon
3 New River Gorge
3 Middle Ocoee
2 Lower Yough
1 Upper Meadow
1 Bloomington
1Chatooga Section 4
1 Upper Ocoee
1 Pigeon
1 Balcony
1 NOC Wave

Then there were some PFD’s
1 Elk
1 Shenandoah Staircase
1 Tygart Valley Falls
1Charlotte WW Park
1 Black Rt. 3 Wave, park and play
2 Stonycreek
2 Cheoah
2 Russell Fork Gorge
5 Ottawa, very long days of park and play

I also got in a bunch of hand paddling including the Middle Ocoee and NRG at around 1.9 feet.

As far as carnage, I have been very very lucky. I got hit in the head by a C-1 on the Middle Ocoee and I had to climb out of my boat after being pinned on a low water run of the Upper Gauley, thanks for the rescue Juggy

OK, here goes...

I've been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run
I took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces because I had to be free
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me.

Ok well here it is. [/list]

5 trips down the fallsline of the Rapp.
20 days on the Rivana in C-ville.
4 laps in two trips to the NB @ Bloomington
1 Upper James

5 trips on the Middle Maury
1 Maury Ledges section (hope to get Goshen PFD this Spring)
5-10 Balcony
20 Trips taken to the Moormans put in to see that there is no water

This list definitely isn't as impressive as the ones above, but it did include a few new trips for me last year. Hopefully 2008 brings more rain so I can double the length of this list next year!

Bottom Tye (PFD)
3 trips on various sections of the SF Shenandoah including my first time coordinating a Coastal's trip. (can you call that a PFC?)
James - Seven Islands
James - Howardsville to Scottsville
A couple of trips on the SF Rivanna, Rivanna - one may have been a hike/paddle due to very low water.
James - Wingina to Howardsville (PFD)
Upper James - Richmond (PFD)
