Elk River
below Webster Springs
a new meaning for New River Rendezvous! two new rivers - Top Gauley on Sat. and Elk on Sunday.

playing with google maps i get 8 shuttle miles and 10 river miles, which agrees with "Wildwater West Virginia".
It was a really fun trip! Thank you Ed for getting us there and down. Thank you John and Lee for toting my boat and gear, and thank you everybody for being there!
as you leave the houses and come to a bend to the right there is a long steep rock garden to pick your way through and then get to river right to come through upright. (just for the record - I did.)
lots of rock gardens along the way. no flat water stretches. us aspiring intermediates were given a good step up. no houses to speak of once we left Webster Springs, yet those of us that had run shuttle knew that the mountain road was never too far away.
long, but a fantastic trip.

Top Gauley
Glad you got to paddle the Elk. Nancy and I had a great time paddling with the group on the Top Gauley on Saturday with new friends (and a few old friends). I think there were 25 river craft and 30 people - kayaks, canoes and a variety of inflatables. The age range was from 6 or 7 to 71 (if I was the oldest).

Thanks to all who made these trips possible and especially Ken (for organizing the whole event), Chuck (for coordinating the Top Gauley trip), and Ed (for coordinating the Elk River trip and especially for not letting my canoe continue downriver alone). Great fun with good friends (old and new). Wonderful water and remote locations. What a great way to end the summer!
