Hi all,
If there are any members of the College of William and Mary community lurking among the Coastals, I hope you will join other whitewater paddlers for a roll session at one of the campus pools next Tuesday evening, 9/28. This is an informal session for folks working on rolls or other moves; no official instruction is planned, but there will be at least one professional instructor and several advanced paddlers present. Please contact me off list for more info or look out for an announcement on the various campus email lists in the next few days.
As W&M is unaccustomed to hosting pool sessions and this is a trial activity, the session is only open to W&M students, staff, and faculty who have their own gear. If it goes well, we hope to be able to open future roll sessions to the wider paddling community. That will only be possible if we get a decent turnout this fall, so please help!
We have two more sessions planned for Tuesday evening this fall. This first attempt will not include current students in the whitewater classes, so there will be plenty of room in the water.
Thanks,
Jonathan

I am very glad to hear about this even though I'm not associated with W&M. If you do get the opportunity to open this up some more, please update us. Thanks for getting the ball rolling!

Jonathan, please email me at "wallace4boats(at)gmaildotcom." I have a friend who works at W&M and wants your contact info. I think she probably wants to know if she can bring her husband to the pool. Thanks.

That would be awesome if you could have this open to the public this winter. It gets awefully cold rolling in the resevoir by my house in the winter. It is the ultimate brain freeze.

Folks,
I'm going to try really hard to make this 1) public and 2) frequent when W&M resumes in January.
That may entail some effort to let the administration here know that there is demand for an important service that W&M (a public institution) can easily provide to foster community and safety.
My experience with public pool sessions organized by the CCC in Chapel Hill/Raleigh is that people are willing to pay 5 bucks or so for an hour or two in a pool in the dead of winter, and the practice makes a big difference when March rolls around. I know it did for me.
I'd like to get an idea of 1) how many people would be interested in a public pool session from mid-Jan through mid-March,2) how often it should happen (every week, every 2 weeks, every 3 weeks...), 3) how far people would drive for this, and 4) how much they will pay for the privilege. The cost is important because to make this public we would need to abide by the general policy of having two lifeguards on duty, and they need to be paid.
Thanks.
Jonathan

I would pay as much as 10.00 for an hour and would like to do it at least every 2 weeks and it would be about a 30 minute drive for me.

I am definately interested. I live in Tabb area of Yorktown so not too far. I think every 2 weeks would be good and I would pay $5 to $10. We used to use the YMCA pool in Tabb on a Sunday afternoon and I think everyone paid $5 to $10 to pay life guard and any extra we donated to the YMCA. Mid week would be great as it does not impede on river time.
It would be great. Thanks for working on this.

We did one session at the Newport News YMCA last year, kind of at the last minute. I hope to possibly schedule 3 next year. We do them on Sunday nights after the pool closes, and I think I charged 10 dollars per person for two hours (as you said, for pool time, and to pay the lifeguards).
Since the NN sessions are on Sunday night, a mid-week session at W&M would be great, for all the reasons you mentioned.

the clan and I would be interested. I'd like to see a reduced fee (or even free) for kids in boats. would be willing to go $5 - $10 per session and would be interested in every other week.
Also, we'd be coming from Newport News close to the JRB.

Stephanieb- There are roll clinics through VCU that are open to the public every two weeks for a small fee. There should be info on the web site or someone more knowledgeable than I on here can probably fill you in if you ask.

Thanks, I appreciate the info and will check into that!!
Still would be interested in the Wmbg rolling as I have friends and family there, so any excuse to go hang out and play with them makes for a good day.
