Subject: Manhattan Circumnavigation Sat. July 31th @8:45 AM from Pier 96
Hi
Steve Blumling and I are planning to do our Eighth Annual Manhattan Circumnavigation on July 31
On 7/31 the ebb current starts at Hell Gate at 2:13 PM.
(Our rain date will be Sunday August 1--about an hour later)
Meet at Pier 96, the Downtown Boathouse, starting at 7:00 AM.
This is located along the Hudson River at West Street and 56th Street in Manhattan.
Unload your gear, then park your car at a garage on west 59th Street.
Launch at 8:45 AM SHARP !!!!!
Paddle south on the Hudson at the end of its ebb cycle and gather together at south cove.
Then cross the Battery in tight formation and head toward Brooklyn.
Paddle north on the East River--assisted by a strong flood current
Take the east channel along Roosevelt Island.
Arrive at Hallets Cove Beach for lunch around noon.
Right next to the Beach is the Socrates Sculpture Garden
And the Noguchi Museum is just three short blocks away.
At 2:13 PM the current is calm or slack before the ebb at Hell Gate.
So, we'll cross the East River by the northern tip of Roosevelt Island.
Then head north on the west side of Mill Rock.
And paddle up the Harlem River as it ebbs north into the Hudson.
Stop for a break at Swindlers Cove Park at Dyckman Street on the Harlem River..
The Park itself is well worth a tour.
So is the floating Peter Sharpe Boathouse.
Once back underway, continue paddling north on the Harlem River
After cruising through Spuyten Duyvil at the north end of Manhattan--
Start paddling south on the Hudson River around 6:00 PM assisted by a strong ebb.
On the Hudson leg of the trip, Steve will lead the main group of paddlers (the "express")
This group will get back to Pier 96 at around 7:30 PM
And, I will lead a small "slower" group (the "local") which will get back about a half hour later.
As we paddle down the Hudson, the City will start to twinkle and glow as twilight kicks in.
So all kayaks should carry lights for safety.
Back at Pier 96-- pack your kayak and gear back on your car.
Then some paddlers may then want to join family and friends at a local restaurant
This 30 mile excursion around Manhattan is not a race.
It's a chance for kayakers to socialize, explore, take pictures and meditate.
If you would like to join us, mark your calendar.
And, let me know by back channel email.
Best regards,
Jerry Blackstone

Pirates of the James
Hunters Moon Paddle-Appomattox River
When: Saturday October 23rd, 2010
Where: Hopewell Marina, Hopewell VA
What Time: 1430 hrs (2:30 PM)
Trip length: +/- 10 miles
Trip info:
Ahoy!
We will launch from the Hopewell Marina (the quartermaster is working on reduction or omission of launch fees, normally $6.00) and proceed on a flood tide on the Appomattox towards the City of Petersburg, continuing West until we feel the tide slacken. At that point we will turn and do a leisurely paddle back to channel Marker 18 (Pye Alley) and head up the North channel as we feel the pull of the ebb tide.
We will find a place to raft up for a snack while we await sunset at 6:22 PM and moon rise at 6:27 PM.
Once the moon is fully in the sky, we will continue our return trip to the marina accompanied by the ebb tide. Anticipate arrival at the take out ~8-9 PM.
All are welcome to join us on this trip, though sea kayaks or other long boats are recommended due to the distance being traveled. Because we will be returning after dark, you will be required to carry some form of navigation lights for your boat (Coast Guard Requirement).
