O.C.T. March 27 Goshen paddle & clean-up

Post by Alicia »

It's March, so it's time to plan for our annual clean-up through Goshen Pass on Sat., 3/27. We've been fortunate the past couple of years to have water in the Maury to paddle after a little good-karma volunteer work. I also use some of my Recognition budget to put on a cookout lunch @ my house in Rockbridge Baths to thank those who volunteer.

Good river karma, a free lunch, & (hopefully) a trip on the ever-charming Maury River - what more could you ask for???

We'll meet @ the Rockbridge Baths post office @ 10am to then pick up trash though Goshen Pass - along the road & towards the river bank wherever we can. Then after lunch, if possible, we'll have trips on both Goshen Pass (class 3-4) & the lower Maury below the P.O. (class 2-3). If there's no water in the Maury, we'll head over to Balcony Falls (a 40 minute drive).

I will need a head count by Thurs, 3/25, in order to get the lovely orange VDOT vests & trash bags, & to shop for lunch. Please email, send a PM, or post here. Thanx!

I take it as a good sign that this post was so far down the list - means we're doing a lot of boating! Hopefully, we'll have water for this trip. The clean-up & lunch go on regardless. So, please - I need to hear from folks by this Thurs, 3/25, so I can shop for the lunch & pick up trash bags.

Thanks - Alicia

Hi All,
I am new in the area and never been on Goshen Pass; I would like to come over for clean-up. Some paddling will be fun too, but I do not have my boat here. I can borrow an old kayak from a friend, but I need also an XL-size PFD and a 220-230 cm paddle. Anyone has a spare to share for a day?
Cheers, Vitaly

Hi, Vitaly - & welcome to the area. I'm an open boater, so can't help you w/ a kayak paddle. It might help if you shared a bit about what kind of rivers you've paddled.

As for water options for this trip -- we had a storm this AM that brought the Maury up, & there's a 30% chance of rain Fri. Fingers & toes crossed that we'll be able to run the Maury Sat after lunch. But remember we have a back-up plan to head over to Balcony Falls. I'll post again later in the week. But remember I'd welcome a count by Thursday, please.

Also, don't forget to bring some work or garden gloves for the trash pick-up. I'll get the lovely orange vests & trash bags from VDOT.

I plan to be there. I can possibly bring my Dagger G-Force 6.3 kayak if someone wants to borrow it. PFD, helmet (LG)and paddle included.

Predictions & directions

Post by Alicia »

It looks promising to have water in the Maury for Sat., even w/o rain. But there's a good chance of 0.5 - 0.75" rain tonite into Fri AM. I'll post Fri nite again.

Forecast for Sat is sunny & cooler in the high 50's. Great trash picking weather, since long sleeves & pants are recommended anyway to avoid the hiding poison ivy.

Directions -
From 81S, exit 200, right onto Sterrett Rd for couple miles, left @ VDOT station onto Swope Rd. Go couple miles, @ "T" go left onto 252/Brownsburg Tnpk til it T's, turn right onto 39W, go couple miles to Rockbdg Baths P.O.

Please let me know by tonite if you're coming, as I'll shop for the cookout tomorrow.

Thanks! Alicia
