Coastals Fall Float and Pigroast (Oct 18)

Keep Saturday October 18th free to paddle on the S.F Shenandoah (Newport Landing to White House) and come to the pig roast afterwards – it’s the quarterly meeting - and a presentation by Keith Pitzer from Friends of the Cheat (maybe some music too?) See the Coastals trips schedule and also the Gatherings link (for gobs of details!). http://www.coastals.org/meeting/
If there’s enough interest, people can camp at one of the campgrounds listed (or at Lee Keller's - at one of the dams in Luray, with a bathhouse and big riverside firepit) and we’ll paddle again on Sunday. (Hopefully, I’ll be paddling and not just along for the ride!) Let me know if you have any questions.
Tom McCloud will be continuing the tradition of slowcooking pork starting on Friday night and welcomes volunteers to help out. Contact Tom by phone (number in newsletter/roster) if you'd like to help. They could use some help in the kitchen Saturday night as well, contact Andrea Jones by phone/email. To contact them through the forum, go to the http://www.coastals.org/meeting/ page (I don't know how to put those cool links in my posts!)

See my posting in the Lounge section looking for an extra dutch oven or two to borrow for meal preparation.

Also, special requests for the meal will also be considered, so if you have some ideas, please 'fess up. I'd like to hear what goes over well and what won't.

Andrea,

Last year, everything you had went over very well; the food was delicious. I appreciate the work you and Tom and all those who help you put into this.

For anyone who hasn't been, you're missing a great meal.

Everyone is welcome to attend the board meeting as well, although we'll understand if you prefer to enjoy the leaves and scenery until dinner time.

The agenda is posted at:

Look HERE. The posting on the main gatherings page will give you some ideas. Just click on the bar to the right and it will scroll down to camping info.

As to which is preferred? I don't know. Maybe someone who camps locally will chime in.

The river is a little low, but still a do-able level. You may need to use your river-reading skills to get you through some scratchy spots. The forcast has some rain in it in the next few days, so the level may go up some. Either way, it's going to be a beautiful trip! Hope you'all can come!

Not sure where most people camp, since I've usually been a commuter from Crozet for these fall meetings. If there are people who are planning to camp at the campgrounds, please chime in, so that you all can possibly get together. There are a few camping at Lee Keller's on Saturday nite.

There are usually around 20 paddlers or more that join us on the river and some more that join us for dinner. Lee Keller is a Coastals member who lives on the Shenandoah - I'll pm you with more details.

I'm sorry I don't know where anyone else is staying. Campers, please speak up if you're out there!

Since this is one of our first cooler paddling days, just a reminder to bring warm clothes and possibly an extra set of dry clothes for the river.

This one tends to be a herding-cats sort of thing. As far as I know though, we've never left any skeletons at the take out. I recall a trip where the boat count was 68.
riversedge73 wrote:I have a kayak that I can run the Shenandoah in but, I think it would be more fun to canoe it with someone, only problem.... I sold my canoe a few years ago. Is there anyone out there that has a canoe that would like to go and needs someone to help paddle?
Please know that post did not go unread. I already have a tandem partner planned. I was hoping to offer you a loaner tandem boat but haven't finished fixing it.

Hope to see you Saturday,
