O.C.T. April 12 Goshen cleanup & paddle

Post by Alicia »

Just wanting to make an early plug for this event. Hopefully, we'll have good water, but regardless, we will develop some good karma for the future, by picking up trash along one of the club's favorite waterways.

The plan will be to meet @ Rockbridge Baths Post Office (the old store) @ 10am. Then head upstream to do the roadside clean-up for about 1.5 hrs (with more folks, it won't take as long - hint, hint). Bring gloves. I'll have orange vests & trash bags from VDOT.

To recognize the volunteers who'll be coming out for the clean-up, Coastals will treat with a cook-out afterwards @ my house in Rockbridge Baths.

Then we'll paddle, hopefully the Pass, but also possibly the Maury from Rockbridge Baths down (you can do this w/ less water than needed for the Pass). If no water in the Maury, the back-up plan will be driving 35 minutes to run Balcony Falls. I know Terri Bsullack is also running a trip on a section of the lower Maury, so I'll check w/ her for possible coordinating.

Please post or email me to let me know you're coming. Thanx!

Let's all clean up! If the Pass is running, I'll run an easier trip on the Maury--wherever people want to go. I suspect that the lower Maury will be runnable (but scrapy) even if the Pass is not. We could do the Rockbridge Baths section or one of the easier sections below that. We'll join Alicia's crew for the clean up at 10am and lunch.

If the Pass is not running, we can either join Alicia's group on the Rockbridge Baths section or Balcony OR we can do our own thing on another section of the Maury.

Please let us know by Thursday 4/10 if you want to come so we can have enough food. See you then. Terri

Looks promising for water this wkend in the Pass. But we might get rained on while picking up trash, so please come prepared (& don't forget gloves). I'll have VDOT orange vests & trash bags.

Remember that if the water levels give us options, Terri will take a trip on a lower section of the Maury while I'll head to the Pass.

So that I can shop appropriately on Fri afternoon for the cookout, please let me know by Thurs eve if you're coming.

I'll post again Wed &/or Thurs w/ updates on weather & level predictions.

Thanx, aj

Bump again

Hi, folks -

We're still on for the weekend, tho river levels are an uncertainty. If we get some rain Fri eve/nite, we should be able to run the Pass. We might be able to do a bare minimum run even w/o rain. The Sat forecast is for 70% chance rain early in the day. And low to mid 60s. So dress for rain. I'd say we should @ least be able to paddle the Rockbdg Baths section - class 2+ and quite beautiful.

And don't forget the cookout in between trash picking & paddling. If you haven't contacted me but decide to come @ the last minute, please do come on. But give me a shout Fri eve if you can. So far I've only heard from a handful, quite a few less than last year's large group.

Meeting @ 10am @ Rockbdg Baths Post Office. Bring gloves.

Thanx, Alicia (& Terri)

Alicia reports a visual of 17" at the bridge this morning.

I'm guessing even with zero rain we'll have 15" to 16" there by tomorrow. That's in the 450 cfs to 500 cfs range. That's low but enjoyable for the Pass, at least for me. It gets a little creeky and, yes, bumpy too, but not easier in my view. No biggie, you just need to be a bit more selective in which lines to take.

There is a chance of rain in the Highlands.

Decent level for the Rockbridge Baths section too.

I heard a rumor from an insider that extra grub was being purchased just for folks like you. C'mon out!

Ken and Alicia, I sure hate to miss todays fun, but I do have to work the midnite shift tonight, and my better half (and smarter) talked me into staying local. Something about an old man needing a nap before work.
Y'all have fun,
Jim
