Is anyone planning on doing a pre-WOR Nolichucky run if there is water?
I'd be interested in tagging along.
Thanks, Gerry

I believe what he is referring to is Week Of Rivers. It's run buy the Carolina Canoe Club and is from June 30 to July 8.

If there's water, we're supposed to be going on Friday and you are welcome to join us. If it's not above 1k, we won't go.

When is the Nolichucky too low?

Everyone has their own idea. 900, 650, now a thousand. I have heard of it being run down to 250, but that was not recommended. My first trip was at 500, and I was just so happy to be upright at the end of it that my punchin' and scrapin' did not seem so important.

I was back Sunday May 27 at 525, lowest level since that Memorial weekend 5 years ago. My opinion is I had a great time. There is plenty of water, except at the end of that dumb Rock Garden rapid and that is a bony mess even up at 1700 since higher water just makes that rapid wider and not much deeper. You do have to paddle the pools and maybe you don't want to do it when it's cold and the days are short. (We met at 10 and got off at 6.) I was catching all kinds of eddies, and taking my sweet time down Quarter Mile and Rooster Tail. I even managed to surf Jaws and exit with my helmet pointed at the sky.

So the whitewater heroes can run it when they like, but I know what's there at low water. FUN!

Marshall the whitewater river hero

Back in the day, long before the red-tufted single-blade artist graced the rivers of the South, his ancestor the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, " the father of Constitutional Law," decided that 12 straight years of being the Big Lawman was enough, struck his gavel firmly and loudly, and said, "Court is in recess. I am going boating."

Or it may have been that his friend and neighbor, President Madison, asked him for a favor. "We need to know. Will it be possible to take a boat down the New and arrive safely and securely at the Ohio?"

Yes none other than John Marshall was tasked to lead an expedition to determine the navigability of the New. He must have concluded in the affirmative, since the James River and Kanawha Canal Company was predicated on just such a possibility.

The canal never reached the New; it only went as far as Buchanan, where it was determined to be easier to load the goods on a semi, then go north to Lexington, and take 64 west to Charleston.

My new hero.

My plans for WOR seemed to have fallen though although unless the weather really really turns around in the SE US the list of rivers is going to be pretty short.

See:

http://www.drought.unl.edu/dm/monitor.html

It looks real bad and I have noticed that levels for the Chattooga and Nolichuky are really low for this early in the summer. The Chattooga is about 30% of median flow for this time of year.

Not sure how one finds out if releases for the Ocoee and Pigeon, etc. might get cut back if things stay so dry.

Don.
