OCT: Upper New Trip July 19 & 20 Cancelled

This trip is cancelled. See my recent post below.

Wade"s and Sejal's trip is still on. They have a good sized group.


I’m coordinating the intermediate trips on the Upper New for the summer gathering. I’m planning to camp at Ray’s Campground and arrive early Friday evening. If you’re staying in the campground, we may try to consolidate boats there to save shuttle time, but we’ll see how many are coming.

On Saturday, July 19 we will run the section from Thurmond to Cunard (the Surprise section).
Meet at the Gorge Bridge Visitor’s Center at 9:00 a.m. We’ll put in at Dunglen (near Thurmond) and take out at Cunard.

On Sunday, July 20 we’ll put in at Glade Creek Campground and take out at Grandview Sandbar Campground. We’ll also meet at the Gorge Bridge Visitor Center at 9:30 a.m. This is a shorter run with a shorter shuttle, and the take-out is about 25 minutes from Beckley, so most people have a shorter drive home afterwards.

Let me know by Thursday if you’re joining us either day, including how many people and boats are in your group.

Any hard boat must have floatation bags in the boat.

Please do not show up with extra unannounced people who have not run this section before.

It’s fine if you haven’t run this section before as long as you let me know you’re coming before Thursday so we can discuss it.

The Surprise section has a lot of flatwater with perhaps five Class 2 rapids and the Class 3 Surprise rapid near the end. The river level is in the lower runnable stage now.

On Saturday, please join us at Ray’s Campground for a potluck meal and socializing. We’ll start around 5 PM.

Wade and Sejal Kinkler are coordinating a trip on the New River Gorge which is posted on our Facebook page. Check with them if you are interested in that trip.

Thanks Raymond for coordinating. I'd like to come both days. (If we don't have enough people to help me get my wheelchair up the ramps, I'm ok not paddling.)

I'll be camping at Ray's coming in Friday evening.

I'm a maybe, depending on water levels

Only one person said they would definitely plan to paddle the Upper New, and several maybe's have emailed me that they can't come, so the Upper New trip is cancelled.

For safety, we would need several more in the group.

I suspect that the weather forecast has affected some people's plans, which is understandable. I'm sorry we didn't have enough for the trip, though.
