O.C.T. Maury at Goshen Pass Saturday April 12
Posted: Tue Apr 08, 2025 7:06 pm
As part of the Coastals quarterly gathering I am offering an advanced trip on the Maury River through Goshen Pass. I rate the run as class III (IV) (IV) which means it contains two rapids that I consider to spill over into class IV. Will it be running? Tough call. As of this writing (Tuesday night) it's running at a low super-technical level. Pumps primed. The area is expecting about an inch of rain spread over Thursday and Friday so I'm hopeful. I'll need to make the call early Saturday morning.
Please don't just show up for this one.
If interested, plan on being in the area to meet at 11:00. If the pass is running then we'll meet at "the ledges" takeout. It's a long gravel pull off right next to the river about a mile upstream of where route 39 crosses the river above Rockbridge Baths. By the way, GPS navigation tends to not be so reliable around the pass and there is generally no phone signal so glance at a map at home and take notes.
If the pass is higher than my comfort level then we might run from Indian Pool to the post office, a class III run. If it's too low but not horribly low then we might join Raymond's trip (look around on this message board topic) on the Maury from the post office to Copper Road. If the rain is a bust then we'll switch to Balcony Falls on the James, again joining Raymond's group.
Cheers,
Ken Dubel
