O.C.T. Saturday 4/20 Maury at Goshen Pass

Post by bambam »

This is in conjunction with the Coastals Spring Rendezvous which includes two other trips planned for other sections of the Maury River and a dinner / gathering in the evening. I'm hoping to run Goshen Pass which is a class III / IV section. It includes the rapids Devil's Kitchen and Corner. We are just three days past a quite high water event which makes predictions even more difficult. Scant rain is in the forecast for the rest of the week. I hope it holds through Saturday.

I prefer to hear from you if you plan to attend. Meeting time and location to be determined. We may shorten the run depending on water level and interest.

If we're lucky and the currently falling gauge stretches into Saturday then I will expect a highly technical run. A grizzled veteran boater once said "You'll hit more rocks but you won't hit them as hard." On this USGS gauge

https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/02021500

which is for the Maury at Rockbridge Baths, NOT the Maury at Buena Vista, I've run the Pass as low as 1.8 feet. That was rough. I'd do it again but you'd have to talk me into it at a weak moment. 1.9 is a more reasonable beater boat day for really-open minds that like challenging rock-dodging.

Please stay tuned if interested.

This one might actually go. Studying the gauge, too soon to tell.

Wednesday evening update: I am encouraged. If there are no more dam operations then I'll forecast a level of about 2.2 or 2.3 feet. While these are friendly levels for the sections downstream, not so much for the Pass. It's tight and technical boulder dodging all the way. In Devil's Kitchen it's technical and fast. At Corner the line is thin.

I enjoy the challenge.

This trip is nearly full. I'm going to change "I prefer to hear from you if you plan to attend" to "Please don't show up unannounced."

I have an email loop going on so if you've tried to reach me and haven't heard back then please say so here.

It's looking like we'll be at 2.1 or 2.2 if there are no dam operations. We may see some showers today but they are forecast to be light and scattered.

Cheers,

I am closing this trip. We have some 1st-timer stuff going on and I don't want a too-big group.

Thanks to all for interest. Have fun out there, hope to see you at dinner!
