OCT Goshen Pass Cleanup/Cookout/Paddle CHANGE TO SUNDAY 3/24
***DATE CHANGED TO SUNDAY 3/24***
LET'S DO SUNDAY DUE TO FRI INTO SAT RAIN FORECAST. It's no fun picking up trash or picnicking in the rain. Plus if we really get an inch of rain, the paddling possibilities in the Maury go up. Hopefully this will work for folks. I'm sorry to those it doesn't. Same time, 10am. Please bring a lawn chair & dress warmly for the cookout.
Please join us for this annual good karma event! Coastals has been doing some version of this for over 30 years!
You supply the labor, the river gods hopefully supply some water, the club supplies the cookout, & maybe our friends at Devils Backbone will supply some beverages!
We'll meet @ the Rockbridge Baths P.O. on Rt. 39 on Saturday, 3/23, @ 10am. Please park across from, NOT in front of or adjacent to the P.O. I'll have orange vests & trash bags. Then we'll drive upstream, stagger our parking, & pick up all the trash we can alongside Rt. 39 & down towards the river where possible. Please bring gloves. I also recommend long pants & long sleeves due to poison ivy. About noon, we'll head back to my nearby house for lunch.
Most years, we've been fortunate to have enough water to then run 1 or 2 sections of the Maury - the Pass [Advanced], Indian Pools down [intermediate] &/or below the P.O. [low intermediate]. If not, Balcony Falls is always available as a back-up (35 minute drive from RB). Or there is hiking in the Pass.
To help with my shopping for the cookout, PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY WEDNESDAY, 3/20, IF YOU ARE COMING. However, if you decide to come @ the last minute, you'll still be quite welcome, but I won't be able to promise you a big lunch.
Thanks in advance for helping with this worthwhile club event - last year we had 19 volunteers & collected 25 bags of trash while our partners, Devils Backbone Brewery of Lexington, picked up an additional 11 bags above the Pass, for a total of 36 bags! It really makes a difference.

BUMP
Hope to see a good crowd for Saturday. See original post for details.
Please remember to let me know you're coming by Wed PM (or Thurs AM) as I'll be shopping Thurs afternoon.
Right now the long range forecast isn't looking great for the Maury, but the James @ Balcony Falls is a good level if we need a back-up plan. And Goshen Pass is a great place to hike.
This is also a fun social event in addition to good river karma!

I'm watching the weather closely - the forecast seems to be leaning towards some real rain Fri evening thru Sat afternoon, tho it's still early to predict. Kinda tricky timing. We want rain early enough to bring the Maury up to paddle, but not in the timeframe for the trash pickup & picnic. It might make a switch to Sunday a better choice? TBD.
PLEASE WATCH THIS SPACE FOR LATE WEEK UPDATES.

Count me "IN", rain or shine, Saturday and / or Sunday. I ain't afeared o' no rain. With a little luck we'll have some decent water on the Maury. If the rain fizzles then Balcony will be at an excellent level.
Cheers,

Looks like we'll have a good group, nice (tho cool) weather, & enough water for below the PO after the cookout.
Advance thanks to all those who've let me know they're coming.
See you guys tomorrow!
