Piney-Tye Paddle on Saturday, 1/14/23
Piney-Tye Paddle on Saturday, 1/14
All,
Waking up to a temperature of 24F does not inspire me to post about paddling. But I am on the calendar for a Piney-Tye run on Saturday and there is a good chance of rain on Thursday evening that could produce enough flow for the Piney-Tye run on Saturday. IF I can get THREE others willing to paddle AND the water level comes up to my minimum, I am ready to go! My lower limit for the Piney is 170 cfs (3.15’) and the Tye is 200 cfs (3.74).
I may not be able confirm this trip until I can get a flow late Friday afternoon. Keep watching the Coastals web and FB pages for updates. This is a Class I-II high beginner/low novice run (flow dependent), 6.0-mile paddle. The weather will be cold, at a projected high of 44F and partly sunny. The water tempt will be no more than 40F. Cold water gear is required.
The plan is to meet at 1438 Rose Mill Road at the bridge, just north of the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trailhead at 11:00 to set shuttle. We will drop gear and move as many vehicles to the take-out at 10 South Powells Island Road as possible. If you need directions let me know and I’ll send you a map.

Okay all, the Tye & Piney, neither came up to a minimum flow. They will be well below minimum tomorrow. Coupled with cold temperatures, the paddle trip is OFF for Saturday. I suggest everyone look for a paddle trip for Sunday or Monday. Unfortunately, I am busy both of those days.
Thanks for all the shares on cold weather paddling. Have fun and be careful out there.
