3rd Jackson Pulse Release, 8/14/2019

Post by PaddleAllen »

All,
The third Jackson River Pulse Release is Wednesday, 8/14/2019. For the new partakers, this is a fast 13 mile class I – II run, with some nice wave trains. There is one, Class III-, rapid right below the dam. You can choose to run it or skip it; your choice. Usually, about half the group runs the top rapid and the other half puts in just below the rapid. The put-ins are separated by a mere 150 yards. Bring a lunch and plan on spending the day with us. It is a good idea to bring a change of clothes for after the run. Join the caravan or meet us at Petticoat Junction take-out at 10:00. Timing on the pulse is everything, please be prompt. For those in C'Ville or Waynesboro areas, I have room in my truck for 2 riders this time.

Remember, this is a dam release. The water will be cold (mid-50 F), so dress appropriately. The flow will be high, so anticipate strong and erratic currents in some places. Even though this is a relatively easy run, the high flow necessitates that everyone be strong swimmers. I do not consider this a beginner run; this is a low novice or better run. Only experienced paddlers on the top rapid, please.

Here is the schedule.
Location Arrive Depart
Seminole Properties, 100 Comdial Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901 0715 0730
Lexington Wal-Mart, 1233 N. Lee Hwy, Lexington, VA 24450 0845 0900
Take-out at Petticoat Junction, 200 Mays Lane, Covington, VA 24426 1000 1015
Put-in at Gathright Dam, 100 Stilling Basin Road, Hot Springs, VA 24445 1030

Allen, I've been intrigued by these pulse release posts you've been making for the last few years and have been wanting to paddle this section of the Jackson. I mentioned it to two buddies who are also interested. We are all experienced whitewater boaters with decades of experience.

Tentative plans...
We will most likely be leaving from Remington. We will be traveling in a VW Jetta(probably) and be paddling in a Shredder and a Thrillseeker. They can fit in the trunk. The car has racks on top and I can help with the shuttle at the beginning or end of the trip.

I will need a 12v outlet at the putin.
