Kibler Valley, Saturday, 8/3/19

Post by PaddleAllen »

All,
Several of us will be making a run down to Kibler Valley on the Dan River on Saturday, Aug 3rd. This is a short and lively class II-III paddle on a narrow section. The hydroelectric plant graciously plans to provide a recreation release each Saturday, at least through July, from 11 AM to 5 PM. The plan is to meet at the power plant by 10:30 and set the shuttle from there. I hope to get two runs in.

The caveat is, the releases are contingent upon having sufficient water in the reservoir for them to generate. Unfortunately, the hydroelectric plant cannot guarantee weeks in advance that they will have sufficient water in the reservoir to generate. Often it is not until the Friday afternoon before that we can get confirmation that they will/will not generate. So watch the postings carefully. In the event Kibler is not runnable, the backup paddle will be Balcony Falls.

If you are interested in going, let me know and provide a contact #. I will make every effort to keep you updated.
Thanks,
Allen

The recreational releases are every Saturday in July with the Kibler race on the last release day July 27. Just a thought! Make sure to call that morning !

I'll join you there as long as it appears the release will be at least minimally sufficient. I'll email you with my contact information.
Thanks,
Jeff

I'm interested but not sure yet if I can make it. Will keep a watch on post & let you know.
Where are you planning on taking out? Not sure what the river looks like right now below the race take-out. I did see a rather bad looking strainer in the current from the road just below the race take out as the road starts up hill. Also heard that there might be one near the last bridge near the church.

All,
Good news, I checked with the hydroelectric plant and they are projected to generate 7500-9000 kW on Saturday. I will check again Friday afternoon and confirm, but as of now the trip to Kibler is still on for Saturday 8/3. Plan on meeting at the hydro plant at 10:15. We will set the shuttle there and try to get at least two runs. We can decide if we want the make the full run or the race run. I saw a posting of a big strainer on the lower section.

We are a go! The power house confirms they plan on making a recreation on Saturday. Not sure of the flow, but between 7500kW and 9000 kW. Hope for 9000, but I'll take 7500 kW! I have 10 people indicating they are going. Meeting at the hydro plant at 10:00 to set shuttle. I'll be in a silver Dakota with at least 3 kayaks in the back. One is a big A red XP10.
