And let's not forget about Florida's fabulous flatwater. Here is a link to Blackwater River State Park, where I have reserved a campsite the week following Thanksgiving, Nov. 25 through Dec. 1.

Blackwater River is at Florida's west end, flowing into Pensacola Bay. Once the area was worked hard to grow cotton and get some money from pine trees. Lots of sand washed down and now there is a pristine beach on every riverbend. Blackwater River State Park is at the southern side of Blackwater State Forest, Florida's largest. There is camping there too. Farther north the water starts in the Conecuh National Forest in Alabama. The land and water are well cared for now and hiking, bicycling, and paddling along with hunting and fishing are the draw. With tribs Juniper Creek and Coldwater Creek (too cold to swim in August) there are more river trips in the watershed than you can do in a week.

The state park is about 45 minutes from Pensacola. Going east from Pensacola Beach on the barrier island is a long stretch of undeveloped (except for a 2 lane road and some beach parking pavilions) beach and dunes.

Since becoming a Floridian I do a fall trip here in the Panhandle and in spring - late February - like to spend a week down the peninsula. Come on down.
