OCT (Official Club Trip) Bottom Tye May 26
OCT (Official Club Trip) Bottom Tye May 26 I'm coordinating a trip on the Bottom Tye for May 26. Let me know if you are interested. Right now it's a bit high but we'll check on Thursday Night. Who is interested will determine whether trip goes or not .
Max I've done is 470 cfs. That's combined Tye and Piney. I'd be comfortable increasing that to 600 or 650 cfs depending on the group. It's currently 1,500. May very well come down quite a bit by the weekend.

Above 29 on Lower Tye
The lower Piney looks like maybe 1/2 class up from lower Tye if one wanted to combine or do lower Piney down to bridge on Lower Tye.
I have never been on lower Piney.
A group of friends with newbies is looking to maybe go Saturday on Lower Tye.
Personally, I think 500 is a good level as 300 or so, for me, seems way to low and slow.
I see no issues for 600 - 700 cfs if low intermediate skills and even novices with a few easy rivers under belt would likely be fine if shepherded.
Depends on skills, comfort, etc. but I have started many new paddlers off at 400 - 500 cfs on the lower Tye with no issues.
Everyone has their own comfort level and I know Ginny knows this river as well as anyone.
Not sure if I am going as I am looking to see if any Class 3 to 3+ trips show up.
Good luck and hope people have fun paddling this weekend wherever they go. Lots of choices on a warm weekend. Hopefully rain will not be an issue.
Don.

hope to go
Hello!
I am hoping to join you on Saturday. I am a class III open boater, but I haven't been out yet this season.
I don't know the exact put in and take out points and haven't done this run yet. Can you give me some more info so I can put my gps into service? I couldn't tell the access points from the AW site, either. But excited for something new!
And last thing-- I am watching the weather before I make a final go/no go decision. I love paddling in the rain, but is this river too wide to be out in thunderstorms? I'm two hours away in Blacksburg, so I don't want to drive all that way to end up not paddling.
Sorry for that long response!
Katie

I expect that we're going to have a great level on Saturday. now i'm not sure about the dang weather. No, this river is not too wide to be out in thunderstorms .. NOT that i want to be out on any river in thunderstorms. It's pretty narrow actually for the most part.
it's a fun class II. We will meet at Tye River Depot at 10:00 on this map http://goo.gl/maps/NtlFV to set shuttle. If the Piney is above 120 cfs we'll put in at Rose Mill Road and paddle the bottom Piney into the Tye. Like Don said - it's a tad more technical than the bottom Tye. It's narrow for the first mile or so.
Please let me know if you are coming. bring a lunch.
my contact info is in the Coastals directory

New Wood
Hey Ginny,
If you all go downstream, about a mile below Tye River Depot at the big island is a new huge logjam blocking the left channel. You can squeeze by against the left bank but it is a sketchy move. I saw a beaver a bit upstream - need to entice him to clear this out. Fortunately, the right channel is all clear and has plenty of water at this flow.
Also, just downstream of the Tye Race start (where S. Powells Island road leaves river left for good) around the right hand band in the first real rapid, is some small wood against the hippo rock on river right at the top of the rapid. Easily avoided, just a heads up.
Best,
Dave
