OCT - Potomac, North Branch, Barnum to Bloomington 4/21/2018
Mark your calendars for April 21st!
The North Branch of the Potomac offers a fun class II+ river that is suitable for beginners and intermediate paddlers. The water is cold but is surprisingly refreshing if the air temps are warm enough. There is a fun lunch spot that allows you to watch paddlers surf a small (and very fun) feature while you eat.
I will be camping Friday evening the 20th and paddle on the 21st. I'm going to meet everyone at the Bloomington takeout at 10 AM on Saturday the 21st. If the weather is nice I might stay for a second night and paddle on Sunday as well. The drive to Bloomington, MD is about 3.5 hours from Lexington, VA and about 4 hours from Richmond, VA. If you are interested in camping, there are several areas that offer camping. The New Germany State Park and the Savage River National Forest both have primitive camping options, and the New Germany State Park (I think) has options for RV's. Camping will cost you a few bucks but it's not unreasonable. The solitude is very refreshing.
Bring some cash... I found out last year on this trip that there is a small fee for parking at the put-in. If I remember, it was maybe $2 a person. This fee helps maintain the put-in and pays for toilets for all boaters and is worth every penny.
