Cheat Narrows 5/2

Post by PrimaryColors »

I am coordinating a trip on the Cheat Narrows for Saturday 5/2 (Cheat Fest weekend). Rough details:

9 AM: leave from Pine Hill Campground for those staying there
10 AM: Meet at Lick Run takeout to shuttle to put-in.
1 PM (Approx): Off the river, return shuttle drivers to their cars

Notes:
I've never run this section before, but I understand it is class II-III.
If the river is running too high for my comfort Friday afternoon, I would be interested in running this section instead of the race in the canyon.

Let me know if you're interested.

Haven't ran this river yet, but I'm definitely down for it this weekend. Gonna be fun.

I won't be attending but will throw in a thumbs-up for this run. I've run it several times and agree with the class II - III rating, at ordinary mortal levels. At flood I hear it's more than that but I haven't seen it. At somewhat high water the features start washing out but you still get fun wave trains. As it drops from there the features get more interesting. Bomb down the middle or work the eddies to your heart's content.

The run is mostly roadside so shuttle is super easy plus you get to view what's in store. Haha, um, teaser, except for the rapid named "Calamity". It's an honest III at ordinary levels, easy to scout on the right, fairly easy to portage on the right too if you don't like the looks of it. There is a generous recovery pool below.

It's quite pretty too. Keep an eye out for the trilliums as they will likely be in bloom.

Gushing recommendation complete,

Ken Dubel
