White water near Roanoke ?

Post by joshstefanic »

I will be in Roanoke va for a few days after thanksgiving. I will be bringing a boat with me in the hopes I can run something. The closest rivers iv paddled are the gually and the James which are both 3 hours away. So I'm basically looking for info on any closer runs that I should keep an eye on.

Thanks [/code]

Foster Falls

Post by David »

We plan to meet at Foster Falls on New River on Friday November 29 at 11am. It is a class 2-3 run that is only about 3/4 mile long, with putin and takeout both in the park.

Foster Falls has the most even and level ledges that I have seen, but they are broken up on river left which is the route we follow. The drops middle and right are five feet or so and have a keeper look to them.

Foster Falls is the headquarters for New River Trail State Park, a 53 mile trail built on a discontinued Norfolk and Western branch. It is two miles downstream from the I-77 bridge over New River and about 1 1/2 hours drive from Roanoke.

Could use some rain before then.

Closest run might be Roanoke Gorge. Class 1-2 float, maybe some Class 3 at certain levels just below the Niagara dam.

We have a lot of runs here BUT we need rain bad!! Even the Balcony Falls run is low. You can always check here or Facebook to see what is running around Roanoke! Check Roanoke area paddlers or Boaters of the 434/540 on Facebook.

Listen to Kurt. He is wise. Without significant rain in the next week you will be driving to the New River Gorge from Roanoke. That'd be your closest bet. All the closeby good stuff is way too LOW right now.

With all of the rain, the Maury might run. It's about an hour from Roanoke. As Kurt said, check the Facebook pages for last minute trips, and check back here for possibilities as well.

Like Raymond said, the boaters 434/540 and Roanoke area paddlers Facebook groups will be your best bet to catch a last minute trip on Maury or in greater Roanoke area. Wednesday afternoon is looking like a possibility. If not that the James through balcony falls will probably be at a fun play level thru the weekend.
