The Xterra Triathlon is coming back to Richmond so it is time again to bring together our boaters to help with swim safety. Post here or PM me if you can help. Detailed information will go out to those I hear from. The races are on Sunday, June 9, and will have 3 separate starts: 8:00 a.m.; 9:15 a.m.; and 9:45 a.m. These start times require for us to reset the swim course twice this year which will create a new challenge for us. Greater numbers of boaters helping will make a positive difference with the work that goes into arranging the turn buoys. Our veteran volunteers can attest to that.
The target number of boaters is 18. This is the only triathlon hosted in moving water (other than an ocean swim) and there will always be competitors who may panic at the start or choke on water and need temporary assistance until they can proceed. Having a large number of boaters present on the swim course gives these athletes greater confidence and the event organizers alway enjoy seeing our presence on the water. Benefits will be water, sports drink, maybe a snack, and volunteer t-shirt. If you PM me that you will be helping and send me your t-shirt size, I'll make sure we have enough shirts.
ADDENDUM- We can still use more boaters on the swim course. There are currently 12 boaters and I'd like to see if at least 6 more can show up. River level is holding just under 5 feet and is great for the real swimmers, but will make the swim very challenging for the novice swimmers. Your presence on the river will help an out-of-towner the confidence to complete our very challenging swim course.
Thanks,
Neal Fleenor
