Mangles will be Coordinating the Lower Yough Trip at the Summer Gathering 7/28/12.
AW info on the Lower Yough http://www.americanwhitewater.org/conte ... l/id/1687/

Check out last years post to see how much fun we had. :D

Club Meeting and Camping is at Benners Campground. For more info see: http://www.coastals.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11686

After a delicious pancake breakfast, cooked by the officers of the club (please use this opportunity to tell the officers what you would like to see from the club),
we will plan on loading boats for shuttle, leaving by 9:30. Don’t forget to have some money for shuttle tokens (to be bought at the Put In in Ohiopyle). I believe they are $4.00 each.

For Saturday, I have procured 28 hard boat passes for the 10:00.
This will be a “First Timer” Friendly Trip. Please let me know if you are a First Timer or someone that just needs a little extra help, and we will put you together with the appropriate experienced paddler.

If not everyone in your family is a paddler (a really odd thought, but it happens), but would like to get on the river. There are several outfitters that will rent rafts, guided rafts, shredders and duckies.

If there is any interest in a Middle Yough Trip (Class 2) let me know and I will try and find a Coordinator for that. http://www.americanwhitewater.org/conte ... l/id/1686/

If you plan to boat on Sunday, you should purchase your own river passes from the park. There is a shorter loop run for those who want to get on the road early. You may call 724-329-8591 or buy online at http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/ ... /index.htm
We will be paddling on Sunday, but it tends to be a bit looser because people want to get on the road. That will be coordinated as the time approaches and we can reserve launch times as needed.
Please chime in and we will see what consensus (if any) develops.

Coastals trips are intended primarily for club members; however, visitors are invited to check us out! Paddling can be quite dangerous. All trip participants assume full responsibility for their own safety. The coordinator only organizes the trip. Paddlers must rate their own ability for these trips. Difficulty ratings are intended as a rough guide and are subject to error. You are expected to research an unfamiliar river yourself. Please don't just "show up." Please don't bring unexpected guests. Please don't endanger yourself and the group by paddling a trip for which you are not prepared. This list also includes activities not coordinated by Coastals that may be of interest to the paddling community.

I'm in for the Saturday paddle. What time should the passes be for on Sunday?

Some people like to get on early, before 8am, and get an early start home. You don't need a pass to do that. I'm not that concerned about
getting away that early and will probably shoot for a 10am slot start (but I am flexible). I would suggest that we wait and see what develops.
But if you're a need to have set plans kind of guy (and I'm 100% with you on that), I would say that either the 9am or 10am slots will make the most sense.
How about the rest of you, what time suits best. We all don't have to go at the same time, as long as we have good groups.

Really looking forward to this trip. Please reserve a pass for me on Saturday. Jon has a pass for me for Sunday's trip. I plan to get to the putin by 1 on Friday and paddle with Tom. If there are two takers, I would also enjoy a Monday trip. Please post or let me know if you want to paddle Monday so Monday plans can be made.

Have not run the Lower Yough since 2009 so I might want a reminder here or there. I have run it about 15 times and most of it I remember:

Cucumber:

Stay left on the approach. Ferry out but not too far and peel out and go to the left of the pourover rock.

Dimple:

Catch the eddy on the left above Dimple Rock, then ferry across to eddy behind the rock formation on river right.

Rivers End:

Enter left of center and quickly ferry to the massive eddy halfway down on river right. Then a strong ferry to river left to go above waves and rocks that can mess you up and run out on the left.

Bruners Run:

Stay away from Pharoah's Tomb.

Wade, I'd like to join the saturday paddle if there's still room and still passes available! I'd be a first-timer, open boater. Let me know, thanks!

Sounds great Laura. Got you on the list. Looks like we have a bunch of open boaters you can go with to see the lines. :D

Options for the Lower Yough at the Summer Gathering

The Kinder Gentler Lower Yough Alternative (IMHO)
If the Middle Yough is not enough and the whole Lower is too much, consider the Kinder Gentler Lower Yough. That would be putting in at the end of the loop, just below Railroad Rapid. I have talked to the Park Service and as long as we let them know ahead of time, they would let us do this. You would still have to get a pass for this. In my experience most of the carnage is in the first two rapids, Entrance and Cucumber. By getting in after Railroad, it allows you to have a warm up (flatwater and minor rapids) before you get to any major rapids. Dimple can be portaged easily on the right if you’re not feeling it and that would leave the run out of Dimple and Rivers End as the hardest part of the rest. You would still need decent boat control and skills to do this, but could be an option. Give me a call if this interests you and we can decide if this is an option that could work for you.

Inflatable Option
I plan on Oar Rigging (R1) the Lower Yough both Saturday and Sunday. If there is one person who is interested in Shredding (R2) then that could be an option. That person would have to be able to paddle on the left side (canoe style) as I can only paddle on the right. If there are two or three people who are interested, then we could paddle the raft. All would need to be dog friendly as MaxK may be joining us. These options are for either day.

Let me know if any of these options appeal to you and we can work out the details.
