O.C.T. Small streams east of Blue Ridge 2/4

I don't know of any small streams east of the Blue Ridge which are likely to be running on Saturday so I'm planning to paddle somewhere else.

And, you are invited!

I'm working semi-out-of-town tomorrow and so won't decide the venue until Friday evening. Balcony Falls on the James is plan B just in case. It has plenty of water but not too much.

My preference would be a section of the Maury. It will likely be low but recent spatterings of rain have slowed its descent. I'm semi-educated-guessing it will be around 2.2 feet / 300 cfs on the USGS gauge.

The section from Rockbridge Baths to Copper Road (and beyond) (and the scene of Ronnie's fabulously popular trip last weekend) would be low but quite runnable. At the expected level I'd call it class II, easier than what we had last weekend. ;-)

The section from Indian Pool to Rockbridge Baths would be less runnable but possible. At the expected level I'll go with a low III here. We might have to gorilla-walk a couple of shoals but other than that it would go.

I've run Goshen Pass that low many times and rather enjoy it. Yes, it's bumpy but it's fun. Consider walking Devil's Kitchen and Corner (not horrible portages) and call it a III.

Still with me?

In any event, meeting time is noon. Somewhere. Please let me know if interested.

Cheers,

Ken Dubel

I'm with ya! I'll add that the Pass at low levels makes for fun, slow motion creeking. Good opportunity to practice technical skills. And while you may hit more rocks, you don't hit them as hard when you're going slower.

Noon at the post office in Rockbridge Baths. It's probably best to park along the road, taking care to not block any driveways. We'll run from there down to Copper Road.

Feel free to just show up for this one although I do like to hear if folks are joining in just in case something wacko happens.

We'll see how the day is going and might do a short lap on the Pass afterwards.

Cheers,

Ken

I'm going to be a bit of a punk on this one, sorry, well, or maybe not, but the plan is now a low water run of Goshen Pass. If anyone had her or his heart set on the section below the store / post office then I'm fine with running two trips but I need to hear from you if that's the case.

Nice to have options,

Ken

I'm happy to give the pass a shot--it'll be a challenge, but sounds fun.

See you at the Post Office at noon.

If you happen to own a fishing or hunting license then bring it. No big deal if not. Yes, there's a story.

Ken, I plan to be in Lexington today and will be at the post office at 12. If anybody does the Copper Rd. run I would like to join in , if not no worries I have to be there anyway.
