Coastals Summer Gathering OCT to be held on the Lower Yough

Post by Mango »

July 16, 2011
The Summer Meeting OCT on the Lower Yough will be coordinated by Wade & Sejal Kinker (Mangles). :D
Club Camping is at Benners Campground. The Coastal group site is site #501 with site #502 being overflow.
Group site camping is $10.75 a person a night. Nearby individual sites are also available. http://www.coastals.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10067

After a delicious pancake breakfast, cooked by the officers of the club (please use this opportunity to tell the officers what you would like to see from the club), we will plan on loading boats for shuttle, leaving by 10:30. We may have a second shuttle set up for the later time slot. We will drop off cars at the Takeout and then go to the Put In in Ohiopyle. Don’t forget to have some money for shuttle tokens (to be bought at the Put In in Ohiopyle). I believe they are $4.00 each.
For Saturday, I have procured 30 hard boat passes, 15 each for 11 am and Noon. The club is paying for the passes, so first dibs go to dues paying members as a benefit of Club membership! “Membership has its Privileges! Those who sign up first will get their preference on which time slot they would like to have.
This will be a “First Timer” Friendly Trip. :D Please let me know if you are a First Timer or someone that just needs a little extra help, and we will put you together with the appropriate experienced paddler.
One of the Time Slots will be led by Sejal Kinker (Giggles) and the other will be led by Former Coastals President Raymond Williams. :D

If not everyone in your family is a paddler (a really odd thought, but different strokes right  ), but would like to get on the river. There are several outfitters that will rent rafts, guided rafts, shredders and duckies.

If you plan to boat on Sunday, you should purchase your own river passes from the park . There is a shorter loop run for those who want to get on the road early. You may call 724-329-8591 or buy online at http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/ ... whitewater

There is a strong possibility that there will be a trip on Friday, July 15. No permits are required, but you still need shuttle tokens. Check the message board as the date approaches for details.

Also, Alicia Jahsmann will be leading an Upper Yough trip.

Ohiopyle also has Rails to Trails running along both the Middle (11 miles one way) and Lower Yough (5.75 miles, one way) that can be walked/hiked or ridden on a bike. The Rails to Trails is built on an old railroad line and has a very slight grade, so it is a very moderate hike or ride. MaxK, Sejal and I biked the Lower Yough section last time we were up there and had a great time. There are also hiking trails off of that which are more rugged; we found several nice waterfalls, that weren’t far off the Rails to Trails.

Ohiopyle has also been doing some nice improvements since last year and have really made the town more user friendly.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming....WOW What a ride! . . . . . Trying to live up to this, Priceless. As long as you have good insurance!

Possible add to the mix: Tandemonium, a very much unofficial event featuring nitwits (and I mean that as a compliment) in tandem canoes on the lower Yough may occur on the same weekend. It's still getting figgered out on cboats.net.

Upper Yough that Sat.

Post by Alicia »

Actually, I don't think Dave Kessmann is leading an OCT Upper Yough trip, but I am. Depending on what safety boaters I can pull together (hint, hint), I expect to be able to take on 2 first timers & another 1-3 who've seen it but need a little help with lines. I will need to "chat" with folks to ensure the trip will be appropriate for them. FYI, I've run the UY over 100 times over 17 years, and am comfortable taking yakkers down it, even though I'm an open boater.

Feel free to contact me directly if you're interested or have questions.

Big thanx to Wade for what looks to be incredible trip coordination, along w/ Sejal & Raymond, too. And to Dave K. and the Board of Directors for putting on the breakfast. I urge readers of this message board to come on out, join the club, & have some fun.

It'd be cool if someone would step up to coordinate a Middle Yough trip, too. Good for beginners, even brand newbies wanting to rent an inflatable kayak.

Level was 2.25, slightly higher than normal.

Make up for your "cut short" trip, by joining us this year!

Jack (Wallace & Gromit's Owner) and I will be at the Summer Gathering at the Yough. Come on up and join us!

Remember there are plenty of trails that we can walk our owners at the Yough, when there not paddling (or for the non paddlers). :D
I even get a good run in leading Mangles down the Rails to Trails, of course they have to ride their bikes to be able to keep up with me.
And if I'm lucky maybe even Mom (Dad's a bit gimpy right now ) will take me on the Lower Yough like they did before.....please!

Looking forward to a great trip and even better Pancakes! Thanks to the Board for cooking.

Here's the list of who has asked for passes. 16, over half of the passes have been spoken for. :D
These are just for hard boating, I didn't get any for inflatables, they still would need to be purchased.
If that's your preference, it shouldn't be a problem getting them. Let me know if you need them and I will work that out for you. :?

If your not on the list, then I haven't heard from you.

Since we're talking about this, why haven't I heard from you! You know your coming,
you know you want to, so go ahead, it's time to make a move! It's worth it for the pancakes alone! 8)
Don't miss out because you were to busy with, say working, or taking care of your family, or something else trivial like that!

1 Raymond Williams
2 Sejal Kinker
3 Dennis Barnes
4 Liz Bradford

Once these passes are gone, there is a small possibility of getting more, but every day that possibility goes down,
don't get left out of the party because you waited to long.

Happy daze,
Mango

Wade,

I'll be on the UY Saturday after the pancakes, so no permit for me. However, I'll be looking to play Sunday away on the LY.

[Threadjack alert]

Tom,

Are you getting permits for Sunday?
Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke
