The gauge I use for the Maury below Indian Pool is at Rockbridge Baths. 11 cfs. We need about 50 times that amount to start thinking about the section in the title. If the trip proposed below doesn't have any takers then we can hike the nearly dry stream bed looking at what is under the ordinary rapids. There are some things lurking there you might not want to know about.
Enter Balcony Falls of the James. I take the James at Buchanan gauge and add it to the Maury at Buena Vista to come up with a combined cfs. That total is currently 499. My lowest ever was 487. It is super low but it goes. Lot's of zig-zagging is needed to find enough water and you will likely have to wiggle off more than one rock. Don't forget to pack your open and patient mind.
Pretty day in a pretty place? The current forecast for Glasgow (the town at the put in) calls for mid to upper 70's, a chance of scattered thunderstorms (adds excitement!), and winds up to 5 mph out of the SSE (shouldn't exceed 50 mph in the gorge (small joke there)).
Sing out if interested by posting here, contacting me directly, or on the club Facebook page.
Cheers,
Ken Dubel
